San Francisco Chronicle(03-24) 17:45 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- A San Francisco man was convicted of a hate crime Wednesday for punching a black man in the face in a Chico bar and knocking him unconscious after uttering racial slurs.
A federal jury in Sacramento convicted Eric Clawson, 28, of assaulting Carl Whitfield because of his race at the barroom in July 2008. Clawson, who is white, lived in Chico at the time but later moved to San Francisco.
Prosecution witnesses said Clawson entered Riley's Bar & Grill with a friend, saw Whitfield sitting at the bar and said, "I'm not siting here with that n-." Later, witnesses said, Clawson told the bartender not to give him any of "that n- booze."
