Bin Laden Threatens to Kill U.S. Prisoners
Source: CBS News

Al Qaeda Chief says If 9/11 Planner Khaled Sheikh Mohammed Executed; Any Americans Captured Will Meet Same Fate

(CBS) Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has warned in a new audio message that if the United States executes the accused mastermind of the Sept. 11 terror attacks it will be, "a decision to execute any of your people that we take prisoner."

Bin Laden makes the threat in an audio which has not yet been released on jihadi Web forums or chat rooms, but which has been obtained by pan-Arab satellite news channel AlJazeera.

AlJazeera aired excerpts from the tape Thursday, without releasing the full audio. It was not immediately clear how the network obtained the audio, but al Qaeda's media wing has handed over propaganda audio and video to them before.

"My message to you is about our prisoners in U.S. custody," bin Laden says in one of the excerpts aired by AlJazeera.

"Your leader appears to be following in the footsteps of his predecessor. The White house has announced that it will seek to execute the hero Mujahid, Khaled Sheikh Mohammed, and his companions," says bin Laden. "The day the U.S. takes such decision, it's as if it's taken a decision to execute any of your people that we take prisoner."

18. That's what I think.
If his death was confirmed, support for the wars would drop even more. Why would they want that?

5. "al Qaeda's media wing?"
AlJazeera aired excerpts from the tape Thursday, without releasing the full audio. It was not immediately clear how the network obtained the audio, but al Qaeda's media wing has handed over propaganda audio and video to them before.

Does the Cheney-linked group who makes these things think they can still get any mileage out of them?

10. I guess Ari Fleischer got a new job
For all her faults, I just can't imagine Dana Perino submitting to wear a burqa.

Well, not unless a dinner, a movie, handcuffs and a spanking came first.

7. Like they are really taking and holding prisoners now?
I really despise Bush for elevating this gangster to an equivalent of a national leader and head of an army. Al Capone had more real power than this guy. He is entirely fictional.

When Seeing and Hearing Isn't Believing
By William M. Arkin
Special to washingtonpost.com
Monday, Feb. 1, 1999

"Gentlemen! We have called you together to inform you that we are going to overthrow the United States government." So begins a statement being delivered by Gen. Carl W. Steiner, former Commander-in-chief, U.S. Special Operations Command.

At least the voice sounds amazingly like him.

But it is not Steiner. It is the result of voice "morphing" technology developed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.

By taking just a 10-minute digital recording of Steiner's voice, scientist George Papcun is able, in near real time, to clone speech patterns and develop an accurate facsimile. Steiner was so impressed, he asked for a copy of the tape.

14. According to Wikipedia, Al Jazeera is influenced by Saudi Arabian investors.
Aljazeera Publishing first published a magazine in 1992 called Al Jazeera Al Arabia. Since then it has adopted a shortened version of the name as simply Al-Jazeera Magazine as listed in Media UK.<3>

The shortening of the title occurred after an alleged investment by a Saudi investment company. Al Jazeera Publishing was highly critical of the Saudi Arabian government’s human rights records and published a number of critical reports in 1993, 1994 and 1995.

These human rights reports raised Al Jazeera Al Arabia’s profile on the Middle East stage. Extracts of such reports were used in a Human Rights Watch report <4> as published in 1993, as well as the Islamic Research and Information Center <5>.

Since the Saudi investment no more anti Saudi Arabian stories have appeared in any of Al Jazeera Publishing titles, rather the attention appears to have turned against the Qatari ruling family with a string of hostile articles such as "Egypt arrests Qatari prince over illegal car race" <6>, "Qatari prince convicted of abusing girls" <7>, "First church in Muslim Qatar risks backlash" <8> and "Qatar finances sports centre in Israel" <9>.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aljazeera_Publishing

Do I entirely trust Al Jazeera as a source for news from Al Qaeda? No. The Saudi Arabians would have lots of reasons to release a threatening Bin Laden video at this time. Remember all those long conferences between Netanyahu and Obama? Wouldn't this be a great time to scare Americans and jar them out of their support for Israel?

Let's remember that most of the alleged 9/11 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia -- just like some of the major, maybe the only major, investors in Al Jazeera.

Healthy skepticism about the origins of the Bin Laden tape is appropriate.

20. Fyi Al Jazeera Publishing and Al Jazeera TV

are two different entities.

The TV channel is financed by the ruler of Qatar. The TV channel, which has offices around the world, including Washington, D.C., has its headquarters in Doha.

You can hear the bin Laden audio here

We have lost the moral high ground.

War is a "last man standing" thing, not a morality play.
