Vegas Strip to go dark for Earth Hour

The Las Vegas Strip in Nevada will go dark Saturday night as part of a project to highlight climate change.

The Strip is participating in the World Wildlife Fund's Earth Hour. At 8:30 p.m. local time Saturday nonessential lighting will go off.

In Vegas that means the beam that shines skyward from the Luxor and the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada" sign will go dark. Several casinos in downtown Reno also are joining the effort.

The World Wildlife Fund says more than 3,500 cities in 125 countries are participating in the event. All 50 states in the U.S. also are taking part.
