Crowd Storms Restaurant Over Alcohol

MANAMA (Reuters) - Some 100 Bahraini Islamists shouting "God is Greatest" stormed a French restaurant serving alcohol in the pro-Western Gulf Arab state and threatened diners with knives, witnesses said on Thursday. One diner managed to wrest a knife away from the Islamists and stabbed one with it, causing him severe injuries, a witness said. They said the assailants, opposed to the consumption of alcohol banned by Islam, also threw gasoline bombs at customers' cars parked outside the restaurant near the capital Manama late on Wednesday, damaging nine vehicles.

"Abound 100 young men, shouting Allahu Akbar (God is greatest), came to the restaurant carrying knives and shouted at the customers: Why do you drink?," Jahanshah Bakhtiar, owner of La Terrasse Restaurant, told Reuters. "They were acting as if they had the right ideas and people should obey them," he said, adding that there were about 40 customers in the restaurant. Security police investigating the incident declined to comment.

Bahrain, headquarters of the U.S. Fifth Fleet and the Gulf's banking hub, has traditionally enjoyed a more liberal atmosphere than some of its more conservative neighbors. It allows restaurants, bars and night clubs to serve alcohol but has recently witnessed a rise in protests against Western-style events deemed immoral by Islamists. Bahraini newspapers reported on Thursday that young men had attacked a house in a village where they suspected foreign workers were producing alcohol.

2. I HOPE people can see the parallels between Christian and Islamic
fundamentalism and dosn't need them spelled out.......However, going into restaurants and threatening diners with knives simply because they drink is going way too fucking far. Even the nuttiest Xtian fundy extremists don't do that kind of shit (yet).

4. Christian fundies don't do it yet...
but if we give them enough control I don't doubt they will...but I want to point out that any group/religion if given enough power will abuse it.

10. Getting an abortion is not the same thing as getting Sex on the Beach
I can almost, sorta, kinda see why fundies are upset about abortion - in that IS the termination of a pregnancy, i.e. a fetus is aborted. I am in favor of a woman's right to choose, but I can understand why small-minded, tunnel-visioned extremeists would be up in arms about it, although going so far as to fucking KILL doctors who perform these operations is evil and stupid. (Fuck You Randall Terry.) Abortion is a much more emotionally charged issue than drinking alcohol, IMHO.

21. Except
when fertilization is prevented or implantation of the fertilized egg in the uterus is prevented. In both these scenarios there is no pregnancy and the psycho religionists want to prevent those as well.

18. Jesus drank wine
I would hope even the dumbest Xian fundie would know their Bible enough to know that.

In fact, Jesus' first recorded miracle was turning water into wine.
Seems to me to be encouraging people to drink!

20. No, it was "grape juice", not wine.
Any fundy worth his Benny Hinn videos will tell you that. No explanation to how they kept the juice from spoiling.

25. Nope, I'm not.
"So, if booze is EVIL, how do you explain Jesus turning that water into wine at the wedding he was attending?"

"Oh, that wasn't 'wine' in the sense we know 'wine', that was grape juice. they drank the juice of grapes, not wine. Wine is fermented, or spoiled, and Jewish dietary laws prohibited eating spoiled things..."

"Then why didn't the Bible say 'Grape Juice'?"

"Because the Ancient Texts were translated by men who put the word 'wine' in where it should have been 'grape juice'..."

"Then the Bible is WRONG???"

"Don't you have a tape deck or satellite dish to fix or something?"

24. I'm a Christian and there's nothing at all wrong with drinking
Just not to excess! In the Psalms it even says that God gave men wine to "make their hearts glad." Just don't overdo it.

19. And they won't stop at Booze...
"Excuse me, don't you carry 'The American Prospect' anymore?"

"Oh, no, we were getting too many complaints...something about 'dangerous ideas'...did you see we have the newest 'Left Behind' book in?"

"Excuse me, which aisle is the family planning stuff in?"

"Oh...We keep 'THOSE THINGS' behind the counter now. You also have to show proof of marriage and have a letter from your pastor before we'll sell you any..."

"behind the....Um, what IS that on the Pharmacist's forehead?'
Oh, that? he got that 'Crown of Thorns' tattoo after seeing Mel Gibson's new movie 'Jesus III: The Ascension'..."

5. Read your history friend, it has already happened here once
Except instead of using knives, they used hatchets. Think Carrie Nation, among others. The result was Prohibition, and we all know how well that went.

Scary thing is that it could happen here again.

They just transferred the drug in question to marijuana. And we all know how THAT went. Just ask Tommy Chong.

6. Religious Fanatics are the most dangerous!
Politics was invented so that humans have something to argue about and not go completely insane.

"My system is better than your system" is a lot less likely to cause a major battle than "My God is better than your god".

8. Welcome to DU
But Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot were primarily ideologues rather than religious.

I don't think the evidence is in your favour.

14. True,
but I was speaking more of the average people whipped into a killing frenzy by religious issues/differences.

Leaders like Hitler, Stalin & Pol Pot are motivated by power and use whatever methods (idealogy, religion, nationality) they believe will bring the desired result.
