South Korea rules out navy ship sunk by North Korea

BAENGNYEONGDO, South Korea (Reuters) – South Korea on Saturday all but ruled out the chance that North Korea was involved in the sinking of one of its navy vessels near their disputed border.

Initial speculation that North Korea might have sunk the ship had spooked Wall Street on Friday. Share prices dipped partly on geopolitical concerns, and the won dropped against the dollar.

"Given the investigations by government ministries so far, it is the government's judgment that the incident was not caused by North Korea, although the reason for the accident has not been determined yet," a senior government official was quoted as saying by Yonhap news agency.

A Reuters reporter on Baengnyeongdo island near where the ship sank said about 10 navy and coastguard vessels, along with divers, were searching the area and the wreckage.

Next on the agenda is a radioactive release in South Korea which will quickly be blamed on the North. First will come the accusations of a 'dirty bomb' followed quickly by 'failed nuclear attack'.

7. What amazes me most is how many people think you're delusional.

After all the crap we've seen in the past 10 years, they still don't get it that the money is running the war machine all over the planet. Unfortunately, the scenario you paint is totally possible these days. Why anyone would not think so is beyond me. Have these people been living in some sort of Ozzie and Harriet show that the rest of us haven't been invited to?

My opinion is that a war on the Korean peninsula would dwarf anything we've seen in recent years, both in level of destruction/loss of life on both sides, and the rapidity with which that would occur.

I don't see the South Koreans being willing to hit that button unless forced to by a North Korean attack across the DMZ.

Just my thoughts on it.

my guess is an accident in an ammunition magazine, or however ordnance is stored on that class of ship. I suppose it could also be an errant mine, unmoored from its tether (if they still use those types).

Obviously, I'm just guessing here.
