Obama makes 15 recess appointments, scolds GOP
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is making 15 recess appointments and blaming Senate Republicans for forcing his hand.

In a written statement, Obama says the positions include key members of his economic team, as well as members of the National Labor Relations Board and the head of Customs and Board Protection.

Obama says the Senate has the responsibility to accept or reject his nominees, but that Republicans won't even do that.

Obama says he must act and fill the jobs on an interim basis. Congress is out of session on a break for the Easter and Passover holidays.

''Once again the administration showed that it had little respect for the time honored constitutional roles and procedures of Congress,'' said Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, Obama's foe in the 2008 presidential election. ''This is clear payback by the administration to organized labor.''

3. If he's going to do this, then is it hoping for too much to suggest that these appointees
..be as absolutely as far left liberal as he can possibly find, ESPECIALLY the economic nominees?

If we don't need a single Repuke (or DINO) vote to confirm them, then there's no reason NOT to. And Christ knows we need some actual DEMOCRATIC influence on that economic team, like yesterday.

started his campaign.

The trick for us is to get him surrounded by REAL lefties in the House and ESPECIALLY the Senate. If we can elect those types of candidates (even a couple more REAL socialists), then Obama will be forced into some real leftist policies.

5. We were all hoping he'd do that
especially for the disgracefully understaffed NLRB, understaffed since Stupid refused to appoint the necessary Democratic board members for his whole rotten 8 years.

Considering Stupid's record of pushing recess appointments of men so horrid he knew even his own party would balk, I don't think those bastards have any cause for complaint.

They'll scream, of course.

9. Looking at the names of the appointments now.
NLRB, 2 names up for appoinment:
Mark Pearce and Craig Becker. Looks good. Cause Fox says:

"All 41 Senate Republicans wrote Obama this week urging him not to use a recess appointment for Becker, a former top lawyer with Service Employees International Union and the AFL-CIO. The Chamber of Commerce also wrote Obama on behalf, it said, of 20 business groups that oppose Becker's nomination."

If Obama appoints Becker during this recess he could serve as board chairman until the end of 2011.

They bitch and moan, I applaud.

Let's see, who else is there....these 3 names were mentioned at waiting for appoinments:

Mary Smith, an assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's tax division,
Lael Brainard, undersecretary for international affairs at the treasury,
and Louis Butler to sit on the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin.

56. Oh I think that's just what's happening
I've been saying for months that Obama is a poker player, not a chess player, and this is a poker move. Obama went all-in on HCR and he is now raking in cheques far beyond the mere passage of HCR itself. See the GOP was all-in on this hand too, it was a classic last table World Series of Poker moment -- and Obama had the cards. And being IRL a poker player (really) I expect him to follow it up with a bunch of stuff he knew he couldn't play before.

62. Nothing says he HAS to stop at 15...
What I think he will do is to recess appoint these fifteen, then resubmit the names of the people he wants to the Senate. If the Senate blows him off again, he'll recess-appoint a hell of a lot of people over the Memorial Day recess. The fucking Republicans...it was like pulling teeth to get Deborah Hersman appointed to the NTSB chair, and she is probably the most qualified NTSB chair they've ever had.

If he has to recess-appoint anyone else...oh man, what role could Bill Ayers play in this administration?

Obama Recess Appoints 15 Top Officials, End-Running GOP Obstruction
First Posted: 03-27-10 03:45 PM | Updated: 03-27-10 03:54 PM

President Obama on Saturday announced the recess appointment of 15 political appointees whose nominations had been stalled by Republicans.

They are:

* Jeffrey Goldstein: Nominee for Under Secretary for Domestic Finance, Department of the Treasury
* Michael F. Mundaca: Nominee for Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy, Department of the Treasury
* Eric L. Hirschhorn: Nominee for Under Secretary of Commerce for Export Administration and head of the Bureau of Industry and Security, Department of Commerce
* Michael Punke: Nominee for Deputy Trade Representative - Geneva, Office of the United States Trade Representative
* Francisco "Frank" J. Sánchez: Nominee for Under Secretary for International Trade, Department of Commerce
* Islam A. Siddiqui: Nominee for Chief Agricultural Negotiator, Office of the U.S. Trade Representative
* Alan D. Bersin: Nominee for Commissioner, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Department of Homeland Security
* Jill Long Thompson: Nominee for Member, Farm Credit Administration Board
* Rafael Borras: Nominee for Under Secretary for Management , Department of Homeland Security
* Craig Becker: Nominee for Board Member, National Labor Relations Board
* Mark Pearce: Nominee for Board Member, National Labor Relations Board
* Jacqueline A. Berrien, Nominee for Chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
* Chai R. Feldblum: Nominee for Commissioner, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
* Victoria A. Lipnic: Nominee for Commissioner, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission
* P. David Lopez: Nominee for General Counsel, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

~snip~
Obama had been widely expected to recess appoint Becker and Pearce to the labor relations board. As Jason Linkins wrote in the Huffington Post on Friday, GOP opposition to Obama's nominees had left the board with only two of its five members, which has led to a lot of one-to-one ties.

Some of the other appointments are to critical positions, such as the two Treasury candidates whose nominations had been stalled.

And some were being obstructed for particularly outrageous reasons. As Ryan Grim recently reported for the Huffington Post, the two trade nominees -- Bunke and Siddiqui -- were being blocked by Kentucky Republican Sen. Jim Bunning because he is opposed to a tobacco-related law passed by the Canadian Parliament.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), was particularly eloquent on that matter on the Senate floor two weeks ago: "The Senator from Kentucky has said he doesn't have any objection to these nominees. He's only blocking the nominations as leverage against the President and Kirk. That is pure obstructionism."

That Obama would use his recess appointment powers isn't a surprise. According to the Congressiona Research Service, President George W. Bush made 171 recess appointments; President Clinton made 139.

Until Saturday, Obama hadn't made any -- despite Republican obstruction so intense that even Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in early February essentially begged Obama to do and end run.

"Frankly, I think the President should recess all of them -- all of them," Reid said of Obama's stalled nominees. "There are scores of them being held up for reasons that have nothing to do with anything dealing with these people or how they will function once in office."

There are still about 200 judicial and civilian nominees being held up, some of them for some pretty amazing reasons. And the Senate is in recess until April 12.

Fast isn't always good. Even if I am personally impatient and disagree with the apparent strategy and tactics that got us here.

Lets hope that this last week is just the tip of the iceberg. If it is, if this is just the beginning of getting things done, then the last year of slow torture would be made more than worth it.

I feel like I am mediating my 4 & 7 year olds. You can't whine about something and then do the very thing. Sadly, that is what both parties. There will come a day (hopefully YEARS AND YEARS away) when Rethugs will have the power. They will do the same thing and we will complain.

43. Bush sidestepped the Senate installed embattled nominee John Bolton in a recess appointment
Edited on Sat Mar-27-10 04:40 PM by LaPera
President Bush sidestepped the Senate and installed embattled nominee John Bolton as ambassador to the United Nations on Monday, ending a five-month impasse with Democrats who accused Bolton of abusing subordinates and twisting intelligence to fit his conservative ideology.

“This post is too important to leave vacant any longer, especially during a war and a vital debate about U.N. reform,” Bush said. He said Bolton had his complete confidence.

Bush put Bolton on the job in a recess appointment — an avenue available to the president when the Congress is in recess. Under the Constitution, a recess appointment during the lawmakers’ August break would last until a newly elected Congress takes office in January 2007.

Within five hours of his appointment, Bolton arrived at the U.S. mission in New York to begin work. Bolton refused to speak with reporters.

118. Obama announces 15 recess appointments, scolds GOP
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON – Fed up with waiting, President Barack Obama announced Saturday he would bypass a vacationing Senate and name 15 people to key administration jobs, wielding for the first time the blunt political tool known as the recess appointment.
The move immediately deepened the divide between the Democratic president and Republicans in the Senate following a long, bruising fight over health care. Obama revealed his decision by blistering Republicans, accusing them of holding up nominees for months solely to try to score a political advantage on him.
"I simply cannot allow partisan politics to stand in the way of the basic functioning of government," Obama said in a statement.
The 15 appointees to boards and agencies include the contentious choice of union lawyer Craig Becker to the National Labor Relations Board. Republicans had blocked his nomination on grounds he would bring a radical pro-union agenda to the job, and they called on Obama not to appoint Becker over the recess.

Read more: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100328/ap_on_bi_ge/us_obama_recess_appointments;_ylt=AkLLl5cnuHHw8oIby1eL7bis0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTFpZWtiNG5jBHBvcwMzNgRzZWMDYWNjb3JkaW9uX21vc3RfcG9wdWxhcgRzbGsDb2JhbWFhbm5vdW5j

With Republicans hurling racial and homophobic epitaphs, breaking window's of Dems and sending death threats (and worse) how can President Obama possibly deepen the divide, as claimed in the article?

PS- Nice pro union move with the labor board appointment.

120. Heads are exploding in freeperland. Here are some of my favorites!
Why even have a congress?
----------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dictatorships are far more efficient than Democracies.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The RATS never blocked any of Bush’s nominations, of course.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why even have a congress?
So he can tell his comrades in North Korea that he is running a democratic government. The current congress is strictly for show.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The kenyan is just doing what he does best, sneaking, lying and stabbing America in the back...Republicans have nothing to do with that, it's all obama.
He knows the conservatives object to his radical appointments and he knows it's a back door way to get them appointed.
This president is a low-rent, bottom feeder, and deserves to be in prison.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trying to appoint as many communists as possible.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My husband said he saw "Obama makes 52 recess appointments" on the Fox News crawl about 2 hours ago...
Is it 15 or 52?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gee, how many of Bush’s nominees were held up or beaten down??? How soon they forget.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Am I wrong, or did the Demon-rats keep Congress OPEN during Bush’s term to prevent him from doing this? Was it possible for Rs to do this, even if they’re in the minority??
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
democratic government, the new play on words meaning communist government. The gullible rats painted themselves into a corner and now they have a community organizer telling them they are irrelevant, inept and useless. I'll agree but someone please tell the emperor he has no clothes and he is clown leader of the clown posse
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
(I do not want the Union to be maintained. I want the US to break up. I support secession.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm guessing he will turn out to be like Mussolini in many more ways than just his arrogant posture.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hussein always blames someone...He NEVER takes the blame for anything, I’m surprised he didn’t blame BUSH.
Real transparent!!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I appreciate that this type of thing is within the rules. Why can’t he just say that and not have to get into a pissing contest about “they did this, and they did that..”
A Don Corleone said, “Act like a man.”
I wish one of these swishy politicians (from either side) would simply start acting like a man.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
His nickname is now il douche.....
---------------------------------------------------------------
“I simply cannot allow partisan politics to stand in the way of the basic functioning of government,” said Obama.
What a weenie. This guy is really getting old fast.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I simply cannot allow partisan politics to stand in the way of the basic functioning of government," said Obama, a Democrat,...
Nothing he ever does is not partisan. ZerO has nothing but contempt for this country and government.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Until a few weeks ago the great goat fornicator had 60 dims in the senate. How’s the lack of appointments for a year the fault of the repubs?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
A plurality of Americans voted for Marxism, and Marxism we will get.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
0bambi must be taking the one term deal to heart .
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
DICTATOR!!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s not like Obama and the rest of the Democrat senators didn’t obstruct a ton of Bush appointees...
Good for the goose and all that,,,
("Barack Obama" is Swahili for "Bend over suckahs".)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let’s remember Democrats of this when a Republican President has appointments and spots on the judiciary to fill.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Was that actually how Mussolini posed?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
End the partisan bickering! Impeach President Free Money!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
“This president is a low-rent, bottom feeder, and deserves to be in prison. “
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
One is the former lawyer for SEIU. Also a Marxist, but I lost count of Marxist appointments.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This guy is prideful.
He’s a complete ‘in-your-face’ punk.
I’ll never got over his treatment of Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Becker’s appointment is unconscionable.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
END THE COMMUNIST TAKEOVER!!
IMPEACH THE AMERICA HATER!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"I simply cannot allow partisan politics to stand in the way of the basic functioning of government," said Obama
What?! What does he think *he's* been doing this whole time? They have been TRYING to do their jobs. He's the one blocking at every point. He'll do anything to get what he wants accomplished.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Am I wrong, or did the Demon-rats keep Congress OPEN during Bush’s term to prevent him from doing this?
Seems to me the junior senator from VA, James Webb, made an appearance each day during a recess in order to prevent Dubya from making any appointments. Why can't the pubbies do the same thing ... huh?
