A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday indicates that 51 percent of Americans approve of the job Obama is doing in the White House, with 48 percent saying they disapprove.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday indicates that 51 percent of Americans approve of the job Obama is doing in the White House, with 48 percent saying they disapprove.

Washington (CNN) – Passage of the landmark health care bill appears to have boosted President Barack Obama's approval rating, but it has not affected his re-election chances so far, according to a new national poll.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Monday indicates that 51 percent of Americans approve of the job Obama is doing in the White House, with 48 percent saying they disapprove. That 51 percent approval rating is up five points from a week ago, before Congress approved the health care reform bill and the president signed the legislation into law. Four in ten respondents say they disapprove because Obama is too liberal and 6 percent say they the president is not liberal enough.

Eighty-six percent of Democrats questioned say they approve of the job Obama is doing, a surge of 12 points over the past week. The poll indicates that 47 percent of Independents approve of the president's performance, up 6 points in a week, and 12 percent of Republicans give him the thumbs up, basically unchanged from a week ago.

A solid, but small majority is all that is required. Far more important is to shore up the Democratic Party and congressional numbers, as well as to motivate a progressive core. There is no need for 60% approval ratings. Clinton had those but people didn't like him and voted for a Republican congress. We want a Democratic congress.

8. Because it's far more complex than "a solid but small majority"

If, for instance, you have a 3% majority, but your opponent's base is significantly more energized than your own... you're in trouble. And a mere five point bounce right after a major legislative victory is FAR from a "solid" majority.

I was hoping for a 15-20 point bounce that faded to a lasting 5-10 points.

Supported corporate-controlled trade policies, didn't reinstate the Fairness Doctrine, waffled on gay rights issues, Southern Baptist, tons of stupid wars...I don't blame people for wanting the real thing.

So, kudos to President Obama for sticking with HCR and ignoring advice to drop it or scale it back in order to appeal to that 40 percent.

12. That's nice progress.. and not too bad for a CNN poll.

One thing he needs to get up for sure is his approval on the economy. And I think he'd gain more if he signed a public option or medicare for all. That would really ramp up enthusiasm among Obama's base. I've increased my grade slightly to a B-, but to get back to where he was or better, I want a big shake up of the health system sometime during his Presidency. Also progress on getting out of Afghanistan, banks, the environment, and civil liberties.
