Bush to attend D-Day commemoration ceremony in France
BUSH TO ATTEND D-DAY COMMEMORATION CEREMONY IN FRANCE

Received Friday, 19 March 2004 15:20:00 GMT
WASHINGTON, March 19 (AFP) - US President George W. Bush will attend June 6 ceremonies to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the allied landing in Normandy in World War II, the White House said Friday.
Bush confirmed his presence at the ceremonies with the leaders of other countries in the anti-Nazi alliance during a telephone conversation with France's President Jacques Chirac, presidential spokesman Scott McClellan said.
The two leaders also discussed the fight against terrorism, McClellan added.
"He confirmed he will be attending," said the spokesman.
Bush thanked Chirac for his "strong statement" against terrorism following the Madrid bombings on March 11 which left 201 dead.
The US leader also highlighted the need to lighten Iraq's foreign debt burden, said McClellan.

6. The security arrangements ought to be entertaining.
My guess is that Bush in France will be about as welcome as Ian Paisley at the Knights of Columbus hall. Get ready for footage of demonotrators.

7. True this! Will they put the French people through the same rigors
as they did the Brits? I can't imagine anything else and will the people protest then and be made to STAY AWAY from the naked emperor?

9. Bush only seeks out pre-screened crowds, as far as I know.
He didn't even speak at the British Parliament, apparently because of concerns that he'd be heckled. (Welcome to the rest of the industrialized world, Mr. Bush).

The freakin' White House looks like it's barricaded to a fare-thee-well most of the time. They even close down Lafayette Park periodically, as they did when we had a peace vigil last year prior to the war in Iraq. They barred the people with walking canes and baby strollers from entering the park. I'm not making any of this up, sadly.

No, Bush will be insulated, if he has anything to say about it.

13. Could that be the plan?
Perhaps Bush's people want him to be protested in France. They never allow any protests in the U.S. to be shown on the news, so Americans who aren't savvy about such things may assume there aren't many. I can't imagine anything that would be more of a slap in the face to the French than for Bush to visit on this emotional and sacred day. If Bush goes there and a riot ensues, he may try to play the role of a martyr. And the French will be shown as angry, violent America-haters. They may even use provacateurs to get the reaction they want.
