Spain To Recognize Same-Sex Couples
(Madrid) Spain's new Socialist government has wasted no time in making good on an election promise to gay voters.

"We are going to present a bill to set gay unions on the same footing as marriage," incoming prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said on Thursday in an interview on Spain's Telecinco television channel.

Zapatero said that recognizing gay families was a characteristic of a "modern and tolerant society" but he added that the legislation may not use the term marriage.

...

Zapatero did not say when the legislation would be put before parliament. The conservative Popular Party had rejected several calls to allow same-sex marriages during its tenure in office..

12. Not quite
They still won't allow "marriage". It's no better than the civil unions we have here.

Same old crap.

14. Statewide legal equality of gay unions is much better than what we have
Edited on Fri Mar-19-04 11:49 AM by jpgray
We have only made baby steps in this direction in individual states, let alone nationwide. Allowing gay 'marriage' is not even possible in our country's political climate.

16. This is a great, great leap toward equality.
No, the struggle doesn't end with civil unions, but it's an important step. And this is in a country where adoption is restricted, I believe, and there are more overtly theocratic tendencies. This brings Spain into alignment with the emerging European consensus for recognition of gay relationships. Soon, Europe will be united more or less on this point, and present pressure on other Western countries to follow suit.

10. I am of Spanish descent.
My Dad was the first one born here in the USA. My grandfather and grandmother came to Ellis Island in the 20's. My parents go back to Spain every few years. We still have family(cousins) there in Barcelona. The last time they went they said it had changed so much it was sickening. They said it was so right wing repukelican that everything costed a fortune. On top of that, most of the people with money kept Aznar in power just like these idiots are doing here. Thank God the repukes are not still running Spain. Viva Espana. I love the paella Valenciana. My parents bring back saffron every time they go. I went one time in 1973 when I was 16. The repukes still hadn't taken over at that point. It was really what we over here would call "Old Europe". I will go back one day before I die. I wanted to share this with everyone.............Stevo
