U.S. Considers U.N. Command in Iraq

Under that scenario, the U.S. military would continue to lead its own soldiers, while troops from Spain and other countries could be led by the United Nations, a State Department official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

It's not clear if the scenario would be acceptable to Spain. And Pentagon (news - web sites) spokesman Bryan Whitman said, "I wouldn't want to speculate on any potential U.N. resolution in the future."

But U.S. leaders have made clear they think it might be possible to accommodate the concerns of Spanish Prime Minister-elect Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, despite his insistence that Spanish troops will leave unless the United Nations takes charge in Iraq.

"It's not clear that Spain will withdraw," Gen. Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told The Associated Press in an interview.

2. I thought Bush had been over there two or three times acting like a ......
jackass and couldn't get the UN to do as he commanded.

Is someone else from the US going to play footsie with them and get them to cooperate now?

Bush is just too rude and surley - he can't do it.

8. This way they get to take credit and make it look like we finally
conviced the U.N. to give us a hand, Kindasleesy Rice said the War on Iraq is restoreing the Credibilty to the U.N. because Sadam had Defiled them or maybe he just molested them!

3. This is the whole problem that goes unsaid.

The US wants to control the oil and keep their bases there permanently. The UN doesn't want them to be able to. They think that those things are up to the Iraqis.

Nothing short of Bush overthrowing the leadership at the UN is going to change this. So all of this talk of bringing the UN into Iraq is just PR bullshit that Bush is throwing out there for the papers to run with.

It's not going to happen. If he wanted it to happen, he would have made it happen before the war.

4. And if the US and UN commands disagree on something...
...of major importance re strategy, let's say, will they fight a duel at 50 paces at 6 a.m. to determine who wins? How will they resolve differences? Who has the final say?

If one country is under UN command in Iraq, then they ALL should be.

6. this is getting so squirrelly. Bushco does NOT have a coherent plan
for stabilizing the situation in Iraq which we helped create, let alone the oft mentioned "greater Middle East" referred to today at the White House. Dangerous waffling, dangerous mixed messages, dangerous drift in foreign policy. Dangerous grandstanding. We want the UN but we don't want them. We want democracy in Iraq but we don't want elections (yet) but will (soon). Is some one in charge? This dance is getting old.

10. Foreign nations don't want the UN to be in charge of only military matters
Political and economic matters would need to be under the supervision of the UN also.
