Massey Removes 20 Coal-Mine Workers’ Bodies From Blast Site
Source: Bloomberg

By Dan Hart

April 11 (Bloomberg) -- The bodies of 20 miners have been removed from Massey Energy Co.’s Upper Big Branch coal mine in West Virginia as investigations loom into the worst U.S. mining disaster in 40 years.

The remaining nine bodies, still underground, are in the process of being recovered, U.S. Department of Labor spokeswoman Amy Louviere said in an e-mailed statement.

Massey, the region’s largest coal producer, faces state and federal scrutiny over the April 5 explosion at the site near Montcoal, West Virginia, the deadliest since 38 miners were killed in a Kentucky explosion in 1970.

Louviere said she didn’t know when President Barack Obama would meet with Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis and Joseph Main, administrator of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, about the accident.

18. Ummm. . . most mine workers don't exactly have the money to move somewhere else or
to quit their jobs. If the only jobs are at the mine, the mine boss is a union buster, and there's no money in the bank, how exactly do you expect them to survive?

Most don't have the means to "move away from that southern ghetto" and to imply that they do is foolish.

13. My deepest condolences to their family and friends
Now, how about 25 Federal indictments for murder delivered to Mr. Don Blankenship. This asshole was the reason why these men died.

14. Murder
Why can corporations commit mass murder and get away with it?

Not following proper procedures in deep mining is a guaranteed way to kill a lot of people. If I showed such disregard for peoples safety I would goto prison for a long long time.

This mine was shut down 61 times in the last 15 months. Why were they allowed to reopen after such a horrible record?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/36283885/ns/us_news-life/

People have no choice but to work. If they don't work they will starve on the streets. They have to trust that the company that they work for will protect them from harm.

When a company violates that trust, it is a very bad thing. To not punish companies severely for such violations encourages companies to continue to disregard safety.

All the top executives and the board of that company should stand trial for manslaughter at a minimum.
