Glenn Beck has lost 1/3 of its TV audience since January
Source: Media Matters

Should we blame it on the Massa Moment?

Will that Hindenburg performance soon be seen as the turning point for Glenn Beck: the pivotal moment when the Fox News show began to permanently leak viewers?

Who can forget the March day that will live in cable news infamy, when Beck invited embattled Democratic Congressman Eric Massa onto his show, for an entire hour, to blow the whistle on Democratic Party corruption? Or so Beck thought. Instead, Massa went on and on about tickle fights, and Beck became a laughing stock -- the butt of endless Geraldo-opens-Al-Capone's-vault jokes.

Prior to the Massa Moment, Glenn Beck was averaging 2.6 million viewers each week, and the show was still flying high. And in the short term, the wildly hyped Massa episode produced ratings gold, generating 3.4 million viewers that night, thank you very much. Long-term though, the effects have proven to be disastrous.

And whom does he use it on?

If god is a she then who exactly does she mate with to "create". Or does god just go fuck him/her/itself?

Ying requires yang.

95. I don't think it's Massa at all....It's Beck!
Beck has just gotten so far-out and full of crap that even the people who normally listen to him don't really believe him anymore. Unless of course it's the teabagger crowd who will believe anything he says as long as it's anti-Obama or Pelosi. He also shot himself in the foot when he said, "it's just entertainment," because that's like admitting his show is crap. Just the other day I heard he was calling Bush a progressive. Anyone with an IQ above 25 knows that's bullcrap.

As much as I'd love to say this is great news, have other "news" programs lost similar audience share, or is it perhaps a seasonal thing with the weather getting better?

48. All of the cable news networks are down, not just Beck.
But just to put this in perspective, here are last night's ratings in Beck's time period courtesy of Mediabistro.com

Beck (Fox) 2343, Blitzer (CNN) 617, Mathews (MSNBC) 599, Showbiz Today (HLN) 195. As you can see Beck beat the competitors combined.

90. I read somewhere that 800,000 households have ditched cable
or satellite and gone back to free TV. That could account for some of this slippage.

We're doing it too--just couldn't justify paying for programming we didn't watch or are really bored with. And my kids (late 20s to mid-30s) are not signing on. They are getting their stuff on the internet instead. They only use their TV sets for Netflix.

We did a trial set up with our new antenna tonight--works great. Now we have to dismantle the Dish so we can install the antenna in its place--it's about the same size and will use the same cables--easy-peasy. Once that is all set up, we're going to buy a TiVo so we can continue to time-shift our programs. The monthly fee for that is far less than any cable or satellite bill. Now that over the air programs are digital there are more than ever--we'll be getting about 27 of them. And since we mostly watch PBS anyway we won't miss the other channels. And there's always Netflix.

110. Are those numbers just for the time period or also the repeats?
I generally will NOT watch any cable during the local news from 5 til 6:30. And again it is OTA local from 7:30 til 12:30. Only if there is nothing on will I switch to subscription channels.

And nearly 2.5 million viewers out of 300 million plus is pittance.

6. I'm impressed by the longevity of people like Limbaugh, O'Reilly, etc.
As well as their listeners. There is a percentage of people who don't burn out on hatred, and that's the core of their audiences, including Beck's. I think Beck thought he needed a gimmick to make it big in an already too crowded field so he decided to be the "crazy" one with all the conspiracy theories, and while there are plenty of tea-baggers just as crazy or crazier than he is, they don't have the national exposure that he does. The rest of them probably started off liking his exuberance, but the more he ratcheted it up, the more they started looking at him a little askance and started going back to their "safer" pundits for their marching orders. Now that he's leaking viewers, the only thing he really can do is get crazier in hopes to attract people back to the spectacle. He can't go the opposite way because that wouldn't be Beck, and it wasn't what FOX hired him to be.

10. I can explain that
Conservatives love familiarity and hate change. If the shtik never changes, they're really happy. Conservatives are the reason really bad formula shows like "The Love Boat" stayed on the air when liberals with brains got bored halfway through the first season. Conservatives are the reason "The Lawrence Welk Show" is in endless repeats on PBS stations in flyover country.

Add to that familiarity and the unchanging format the element of directing free floating anxiety and anger, and you've got a sure winner with conservatives.

Yes, the radio ranter stuff is old and stale, the "jokes" repeated endlessly show after show, some of them dating from the Carter years. However, it's that plodding familiarity that endears those shows to conservatives.

Guys like us, we had it made.

Everybody pulled his weight.
Gee, our old LaSalle ran great.
Those were the days.

And you know who you were then, girls were girls and men were men.
Mister, we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again.

People seemed to be content.
Fifty dollars paid the rent.
Freaks were in a circus tent.
Those were the days.

Take a little Sunday spin, go to watch the Dodgers win.
Have yourself a dandy day that cost you under a fin.

Hair was short and skirts were long.
Kate Smith really sold a song.
I don't know just what went wrong.

36. HEY NOW
I'm no concervative but I liked the Love boat LOL (now the later years were pretty bad I'll admit ). But anyway don't think for a minute EVEN if Beck were to continue to lose listeners that these people simply got a brain. They just simply moved back (or just stayed) With Rush and Hannity. I'd love nothing more then to think these people woke up and decided enough is enough but we know they didn't. O'liely and the rest simply have one less person to fight them in the ratings.

Its just like Beck losing sponsors advertising on his show they just moved them to different time slots like O'liely and Hannity is all Murdoch even said as much.

44. A-R-G-H-H-H! You had to mention Lawrence F'ing Welk...!
Kids, most of you will find this hard to believe. But back in prehistoric times, most of our caves were only furnished with one TV set.

In our cave, every week that lone TV was tuned to Lawrence Fucking Welk and his Champagne Bullshit.

As Warpy noted, one night I was channel-surfing and was horrified to suddenly see Lawrence Welk and his Polident leer beaming at me.

Jebus. Did I just hit a wormhole/time warp? Isn't he DEAD? Is this a zombie invasion? Night of the Living Bland?

I hurriedly Googled and saw that Welk had indeed shuffled off this mortal coil...no doubt shuffling with a ONE anna TWO anna THREE...some years ago.

Now I'm careful to avoid such traumas.

I wouldn't watch his show if Lawrence staggered onstage butt-naked huffing meth and proceeded to simultaneously sodomize all three of the Lennon Sisters.

Well, OK, for that I might tune in...

Fortunately, it wasn't Lawrence singing.

Those crazy people didn't even listen to the lyrics!

Unfortunately, most people will not grasp the true significance. Who was the bass singer who sang, "Gimi that Forth R Religion", on the show?

This clip was apparently "lost" from its original air date in 1971 until a few years ago, when it started popping up on the internet.

79. I'm always amazed that the makeup was troweled on
with no attempt to blend anything in, the trowel marks clearly visible.

I only catch a glimpse as I channel surf. My own parents were never brain dead enough to tune into a-vun and a-two with the bubble machines pumping away off set.

It's really grotesque in color.

However, it's conventional and familiar in a strike up the bland sort of way and not as obviously cornball as Hee Haw and conservatives, especially those of Generation Suck, seem to lap it up week after week, probably why so many of them are Type II diabetics.

122. Not shocking, at all
Only the Civil Rights upheavals here in the US finally got rid of the bizarre spectacle of having talented black folks performing in blackface.

One of the last blackface holdouts in the country was the Mummer's Parade in Philadelphia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mummers_Parade. These days, it's done with masks and colorful face paint but blackface was a major tradition for decades.

9. In March Beck attacked social Justice and Churches that work with the poor...
There are a lot of religious righties out there that do believe Churches should help the poor, since Jesus said so.
http://mediamatters.org/research/201003120055
In April he claimed that God talked him...

There are people out there on the right that think he has gone too far.

But Fox was willing to put him on in England without advertisements. As long as he fills a role as a demagogue, I think they will keep him on, no matter how much it costs them.

12. Crazy only plays for so long before it stops becoming entertaining
Edited on Wed Apr-28-10 11:25 AM by Mike Daniels
I'm sure that a decent portion of Beck's audience were tuning in just to see what type of train wreck would take place on that given day. Hell, Morning Joe used to make Beck segments a regular feature of "News you Can't Use" back when Beck would go on a crying jag at the drop of a pin.

Over time though the non-stop crazy stops being entertaining and becomes disturbing which will definitely turn off the people who tune in just for the "show".

16. I keep an eye on the cable ratings just for the heck of it
And I have noted Beck has been flat and has fallen from previous highs. That being said I don't know what the hell he was broadcasting Monday cause he did have a big uptick.

A good site to keep an eye on cable news ratings is this. http://tvbythenumbers.com/category/ratings/cable-news

A couple of notes. KO is down but Rachel is enjoying good ratings as is Ed Schultz.

Has Keith Olbermann slipped from his top ratings perch within MSNBC?

During the month of April* MSNBC’s Countdown With Keith Olbermann trailed the Rachel Maddow Show in primetime adults 25-54 ratings, the demo group that news advertisers target. Although Countdown also trailed Maddow in March, Keith was gone from the show effectively the entire month.

The Rachel Maddow Show is up noticeably in the adults 25-54 demo since January-February, but Countdown has been flat.

Short term blip or new ratings queen at MSNBC?

http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/04/27/keith-olbermann-takes-a-ratings-backseat-to-rachel-maddow-at-msnbcs/49885#more-49885

MSNBC saw the smallest decreases of any network in total viewers. Year-to-year, MSNBC is down -6% in total viewers for both total day and primetime.

MSNBC was #3 in total day/demo viewers behind FNC and HLN. The channel was also #3 in total day/total viewers behind FNC and CNN. MSNBC topped CNN each hour between 6pm-12amET.

"Morning Joe" was the second most watched morning program in total viewers, but struggled in the demo averaging 115K, the fewest of the four.

Dylan Ratigan's 4pmET program was third in its timeslot though saw a small year-to-year increase in demo viewership.

"The Ed Show" was one of the few cable news programs to grow in both total viewers (+25%) and demo viewers (+4%) year-to-year and was the number two program in its time slot. Also, the 5pmET "Hardball" topped "The Situation Room" for the first time in total viewers.

Both "Countdown" and "The Rachel Maddow Show" were down in the demo year-to-year, but Maddow's program did grow slightly (+2%) in total viewers. For the first time since 2000, MSNBC, which airs a replay of "Countdown," topped CNN at 10pmET in total viewers. MSNBC was also #2 in total viewers at 11pmET, which hasn't happened since Maddow's show premiered in 2008.

125. No actually Countdown was down with KO
It was actually doing a little better with Lawrence O' Donnell though it's been down overall. And I'm not criticizing KO - he and Rachel are my must see shows every night on MSNBC. I think Countdown has settled to a plateau in viewers.

The ratings declines for Countdown with Keith Olbermann continue. Year over year declines for the first 3 months of 2010 ranged from 40-45% in the cable news advertiser target adults 25-54 demo, and between 21-29% among average viewership.
While it’s hard to completely attribute cause and effect to TV ratings, it’s interesting to note that Countdown had better ratings (and a less severe year to year ratings and viewership loss) during the month of March, when Keith wasn’t on the air (he was off from 2/24 until last night) than it did during February (and was approximately on par with January).

18. Beck's ratings should've been up since it was first anniv of Tea Party
And with Tea Party protests and 2nd Amendment marches (which IMHO fizzled). And April 15th tax day. But he declined. I've said in other threads IMO Beck has shot his wad.

Interestingly, for the first time since he debuted on Fox News, Glenn Beck did not grow year-over-year: in fact, his show was down 7% in total viewers and 6% in the demo.

64. I've been listening to Glenn Beck for years...
...and I have to tell you---you can only take a person so seriously--when they
wake up every morning with their hair on fire, swirling in a cataclysmic vortex
of terror and angst.

After a few years of this, it's hard to take him seriously. At all.

His shtick is unsustainable in the long term. Every day can't be a freak
out and every day can't give way to yet another "We're all gonna die!" moment.

It's just stupid after a while. Especially when anyone with half a brain can see
that life and the world could not continue if things were even 1/100th as bad
as Beck says it is. When good things are happening, and continue to happen--as
Glenn constantly predicts utter doom and gloom--after a while, it's just boring.

I can understand why he's losing ratings. Conservatives needed a mechanism for venting
their anger at losing the election. Glenn decided to amp up the emotion and get
everyone pumped up on lie-based fear and paranoia.

It's just not a sustainable or credible model.

91. People can't watch TV if they don't have a living room to keep the TV in.
But you can lay London to a housebrick who, or what a lot of them are still blaming for the problems they voted for.

96. Glenn Beck is a freak, a circus side show, nutty as a fruit cake, mentally unstable, whatever
you want to call it. Maybe people are finally catching on.

107. I think a large proportion of Fox viewership is the well-known demographic the Census bureau calls
the "rubbernecking liberal". Perhaps we finally tuned out.

111. Think about the numbers
Beckenstein was averaging about 2.6 million viewers each show. And how many people voted to put President Obama in office? And how many people go through Grand Central Station in NY city each day?

Why do we think this is important? Spongebob gets 4,316,000 viewers each night. Think about that.
