Meghan McCain criticizes Arizona's anti-illegal immigrant law, as dad Sen. John McCain defends it

It's McCain vs. McCain.

As Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) makes the rounds on television, standing up for the Arizona immigration law that has sparked protests and outrage nationwide, his daughter calls it "a license to discriminate."

"Let me say up-front that I do not support the bill that was signed by Governor Jan Brewer," Meghan McCain wrote in her Daily Beast blog on Wednesday. "I believe it gives the state police a license to discriminate, and also, in many ways, violates the civil rights of Arizona residents."

-----

However, the younger McCain - who was born and raised in Arizona, but now lives in New York City - feels the approach taken by the controversial Arizona law is not the answer.

"The concept that a law-enforcement official can stop an individual when 'reasonable suspicion exists that a person is an alien, who is unlawfully present in the United States' is essentially a license to pull someone over for being Hispanic," McCain wrote.

5. Meghan's in the wrong party
Even if she chooses to be an independent, it's better than being a Republican.

6. she loves her dad
at the end of the day, I can't fault her for that.

I don't agree with her on much, but she does seem reasonable, and if more republicans were like her, I do think we'd get a lot more stuff done.

7. And we give a rat's tail about what Meghan McCain says about a law because?
I don't care if she agrees with us or disagrees with us. Since when does being an elected official's daughter make anyone an expert on law or politics?

8. One should encourage
sanity first of all.

Second, she is a celebrity, and we have quite a few of those on our side who are very active in politics and who get that line "why do we care what a celebrity has to say?"

We care because they are celebrities. Because, like it or not, they are known by a lot of people, relatively speaking, and thus have some semblance of a megaphone.

13. The crying game, Bush style.
Would this even be a subject of discussion if she weren't helping to peddle a book that that's supposed to be published until November? DON'T make this a Countdown story, Keith!
