Referendum could delay Arizona immigration law to 2012

PHOENIX — A referendum launched Wednesday could put Arizona's tough new law targeting illegal immigration on hold until 2012 if organizers can gather the more than 76,000 signatures needed to get the measure on the ballot.

Opponents of the law have until late July or early August to file the signatures – the same time the law is set to go into effect. If they get enough signatures, the law would be delayed until a vote.

But the deadline to put a question on the November ballot is July 1, said Assistant Secretary of State Jim Drake, so it would likely be 2012 before the law went before voters.

"That would be a pretty big advantage" to opponents of the law, said Andrew Chavez, head of a Phoenix-based petition circulating firm and chairman of the One Arizona referendum campaign.

17. Meanwhile, Obama is backing off immigration reform.

Even he could see that it was bad timing.

It may be good timing FOR Arizona's law, though.

If Obama wants the climate for immigration reform to improve, he's simply going to have to do something about jobs.

This Wall Street bill isn't going to bring the jobs back, and sooner or later, the voting public is going to figure that out if it hasn't already.

If reports circulating a few weeks ago were right, the evil Rahm (whom I have excoriated as a matter of routine here) told Obama that he needed to put jobs first.

If true, I give my humble apologies to His Evilness because he couldn't have been more right.

It makes me wonder whether a dispute over the necessity of jobs is why Rahm's making noise about running for mayor of Chicago if Hizzoner Jr. decides to step down.

The unemployment rate in Illinois is 11.5% or thereabouts. If His Evilness can bring it down to 5, I'll forgive him for some of the other shit he's done.

Remember, Obama was a community organizer in a community devastated by the loss of jobs in the steel mills along Lake Michigan in Illinois and Indiana. I have never read that Obama was trying to get jobs back.

As far as I'm concerned jobs are the key to the well being of individuals, families, communities and our society.

Lots of jobs, no problems. No jobs, lots of problems.
