ATLANTA - Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter blasted British and U.S. leaders over the Iraq war Monday, telling a British newspaper that it was based on "lies and misinterpretations."In publishing the article, the Independent noted to readers that it is rare for a former U.S. president to criticize an incumbent president, let alone a British prime minister.
Carter, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who was the Democratic president from 1977 to 1981, says British Prime Minister Tony Blair was swayed by U.S. President George W. Bush's desire to finish a war that his father had started when the elder Bush was president in 1991.
"There was no reason for us to become involved in Iraq recently," Carter told the newspaper during an interview tied to the first anniversary of the U.S.-led military strike against the Persian Gulf nation.
"That was a war based on lies and misinterpretations from London and from Washington, claiming falsely that Saddam Hussein was responsible for
9/11 attacks, claiming falsely that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.
