Mar. 22 - It's a rare day when Gov. Ted Kulongoski and tax activist Don McIntire agree, but both say Multnomah County's action on gay marriage dealt a bruising blow to Oregonians' faith in their government.
The difference is Kulongoski says it with a grimace and McIntire notes it with a chuckle.
The county's secretive decision to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples, and its later defiance of Kulongoski's calls for a halt, have been a setback for the governor, who has made rebuilding public trust a hallmark of his administration.
The issue immediately split the state and raised questions about why such an explosive decision was made without public participation.
The way it was handled, Kulongoski told The Oregonian, "does not bode well for credibility." And the state ends up tarred by the county's brush, he said. "The public puts it all together. The government is government to them."
