Cubans losing connections with homeland as they move from Miami-Dade

Jennifer Jove wouldn't dream of moving to the country where her parents were born.

Jove, 30, was born in the United States, prefers speaking English and lives outside of Miami-Dade County.

True, she's only in Miramar, just on the other side of the Broward County border. But a recent poll conducted by Florida International University's Institute for Public Opinion Research shows that Cuban-Americans who leave Miami-Dade County also move their hearts a bit farther away from the Caribbean nation.

The poll shows that almost half of Cubans in South Florida would not return to the island even if communist leader Fidel Castro fell and a democratic government were established.

Bad news for Jeb and George Bush. How are they going to continue to use these people, and take their votes for granted, if they are changing their attitudes, and can't be "worked" for political support as well?

Maybe they'll develope a plan to pay Cubans to all stay in Miami-Dade, where they can be easily controlled by looney-toon politicians, and terminally self-promoting, self-obsessed "godfather" types, like the late Jorge Mas Canosa.

1. Democrats have been making inroads with Americans of Cuban descend
However, too many Democratic politicians can't resist the temptation of sucking up to the Miami Mafia and the anti-Semites in CANF.

2. Not so good news.
I spoke to a Cuban-American who was 42 years old and she paints a different story. She said her older sister went back to see the house were she was born and was raised and when one of the people living in the house opened the door she was overcome with emotion and broke down and cried. The person allowed her in and she discovered that there were 7 families living in her house. She was told by one of the occupants that they understood that they were there as occupants, but not owners, and that someday the owners would return.

Maybe it was a miscalculation on Fidel's part to raise generations of Cubans who never understood the concept of ownership? It sure didn't sound like they'll put up much of a fight when Cuban-Americans return after Fidel dies of old age.

3. Your friend apparently isn't aware that Cuba offered compensation
to the people who fled in the 1960's and that the offer has remained open.

It was even discussed between Che Guevara and an aide to President John F. Kennedy during a meeting, as revealed in recently opened documents.

Compensation was already paid LONG ago to Cubans who fled to other countries, as well as to people and companies from other countries who owned confiscated property, as in Canada, Mexico, etc., etc.

Robert Muse, a prominent international legal expert argues, "In enacting Helms-Burton, the U.S. violated its own explicit statements of adherence to the nationality of claims principle of international law." Incidentally, Cuba has offered to enter into negotiations with the U.S. companies and individuals whose property was nationalized, as it has with the nationals of other countries....

A lot has been written about this.

Some DU'ers do a lot of reading on Cuba, and a lot of DU'ers have come and gone to Cuba many, many times, having friends there, and having continuing relationships. There are others who know first hand about Cuban matters, who might fill you in if it seems you have more questions.

6. No personal questions on something that was anecdotal.

I'm not a Cuban-American and I'm only interested in this on a peripheral level. Thanks for the information.

5. I look at the information from the opposite perspective...

That means more than HALF of Cuban-Americans will return to Cuba when the despot is removed. That's quite remarkable, IMO.

7. I would say that implies "might" or "could", not "will" return.
That's how I interpret the phrasing.
