Albright Says Clinton Administration Tried to Kill Bin Laden

Top Bush and Clinton administration officials are appearing Tuesday before a special commission investigating the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright is the first high- level official to testify today. She said the Clinton administration had made al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden a primary target and tried to kill him.

She said the United States owes it to the families of the victims to do everything it can to prevent future attacks, using all the tools at its disposal, including cooperative diplomacy with other countries.

1. She has obviously misjudged the sharpness of our tools in the toolshed
"using all the tools at its disposal, including cooperative diplomacy with other countries."

Ain't got no cooperative diplomacy in that toolshed, got a big ol' hammer though.

Like that last paragraph,

Commission member Tim Roemer, a former Democratic congressman, mentioned the blistering accusations in the book Tuesday and called on National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice to reconsider her decision not to testify publicly and to appear before the commission on Wednesday.

Just subpoena her arse!

2. We weren't going to bend over backwards and appease the terrorists
Albright, Clinton, and Kerry show how we can be strong on defense yet diplomatic.

3. For those who say Clinton
did "absolutely nothing to stop terrorism", sit down right now and watch the hearings. I was amazed this morning to hear all the diplomatic attempts, and some not so diplomatic, that the Clinton administration enacted in order to stop Bin Laden and to combat terrorism. Those who say he "did nothing" are flat out wrong. Tie them to a chair and make them watch.

4. Clinton made a brilliant lawyered decision that everyone seems to overlook
Before Clinton put a hit order on Osama, there was still this sticking point about not targeting foreign leaders for assasination. But, Clinton lawyered the rule and resolved that bin Laden was not the leader of an established country, therefore, he was fair game. Now we take this for granted today, but it was a leadership decision that was ahead of its time.

5. That was briliant, putting unspoken policies into written word ;-)
I don't know if I long for them days because they were better, or just because I might have been less informed
