WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats have accused the White House of election-year "abuses of power" in trying to discredit former top U.S. counter-terrorism official Richard Clarke, who has accused President George W. Bush of ignoring threats from al Qaeda before the September 11 attacks.

Democrats took to the Senate floor to lambast the Bush White House, which had fiercely condemned Clarke on Monday.

"We are seeing abuses of power that cannot be tolerated. The president needs to put a stop to it right now. We need to get to the truth and the president needs to help us do that," Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota said.

6. Exactly. Byrd's party left him high and dry
His speeches--some of the best in a century--were scarcely attended! And few were those who came to his defense when he was villified. For his courage in taking on the popular war-time president, Byrd became a pariah.

It's rather hard not to conclude from Byrd's treatment that the Democrats didn't want to listen. It was easier just to vote for Bush's war and hope it flopped, or later claim lamely to have been misled.

8. Yep, it has been TOTAL character assassination....
All trying to tear down the Clarke's character but no substance on what they believe is wrong with the man's statement/book. Blah.

CHEAP SHOT.
