For American forces, Iraq is a dangerous assignment in a land where comforts are few, and restrictions on the force - no drinking, no relations with Iraqis and no off-base jaunts - make the assignment a dreary one.

But Brownlee acknowledged the rigors of serving in Iraq could hurt the Army's recruitment and re-enlistment, although he said the military is not seeing evidence of that yet.
"I am concerned that in the long run, there could be some impact," Brownlee told reporters at Saddam Hussein's former Republican palace, headquarters of the U.S.-led occupation. "We're looking at the ways we can take the stress off the force."
