Kathmandu - Fifty people, mostly Maoist rebels but possibly also civilians, were killed when an army helicopter attacked guerrillas in western Nepal near the scene of major weekend fighting, officials said on Wednesday.
It was not possible to independently verify the toll in the remote area.
The army sent out the helicopter late on Tuesday after hearing that Maoists who survived the weekend bloodshed were hiding in the nearby Gaglung district, a security official said.
"At least 50 Maoists were killed in the air operation," the official said.
But a local police officer, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said civilians may have died as the helicopter fired down onto the rugged terrain.
