But the Border Trade Alliance, a business group representing more than 1,000 industry, education and government officials along the Southwest border, says the Bush plan doesn't go far enough.
Currently, Mexicans with border crossing cards are allowed to stay in the country 72 hours, provided they remain within 25 miles of the border. Any Mexican who stays longer or exceeds the distance limitation must obtain separate I-94 cards, which cost $6 each.
Officials of the Border Trade Alliance said they hope that Mexican visitors will be allowed to stay at least six months and travel throughout the Southwest using border crossing cards.
