Fire Rages On Big Bear Mountain ( So Cal)

LOS ANGELES -- Firefighters battled a brush fire in the San Bernardino Mountains on Thursday, where rescue officals were foreced to evacuate tourists and residents.


U.S. Forest Service officials said that the fire began as a prescribed burn that got out of control, and spokeswoman Georgia Smith said that the fire was declared as having "escaped" at about 2:40 p.m.

The blaze began in the upper Santa Ana Canyon area about 2½ miles south of Big Bear City and a mile north of state Route 38.

About 100 acres had been charred by 5 p.m, according to Smith, who added that evacuations were under way at the Bear Mountain and Snow Summit ski areas. Bear Mountain Ski Resort spokesman Brad Farmer said one structure, which was a hut used by the ski patrol, had been lost in the fire.

5. I’m sitting here waiting for a phone call…

My daughter has an apartment next to the big bear ski slopes (she teaches snowboarding on the weekends) and she just left the house here a couple of hours ago to go back up there…she talked to a few friends up there before leaving and the thought was…she could make it….still waiting….<fingers making irritating sound on desk>
