(KY) Gay Marriage Ban Defeated; House Republicans Stage Walkout
Edited on Fri Mar-26-04 04:55 PM by Gunit_Sangh
A constitutional amendment to prohibit same-sex marriages was defeated today in the Kentucky House after Republicans staged a dramatic walkout. The walkout came hours into a contentious debate. In their absence, too few votes were available.

The Republican leader, Representative Jeff Hoover of Jamestown, accused the Democratic majority of an "arrogant abuse of power." He said that's because they curtailed debate without consideration of GOP filed amendments to the bill.

8. No kidding.
I can't understand why they think it's any of the governments business who you, I, or anyone else marries. Could you imagine the shitstorm if, instead of "gay" you substitued the term "interacial" into one of these bills? What can they possibly hope to gain by banning people from marrying, other than to fulfill their own sense of self importance.

11. been there done that
not me personally, but in the early 20th century they tried banning inter-racial marriages, using much the same prattling excuses they use now. Basically that if these marriages happen, repubes will start harassing them.

GET A LIFE, REPUBES!!!!!!!!!!!

3. I guess they took their ball and went home.
Pretty dumb move, actually....we don't like the bill so we will leave and lose any chance of voting against it. Major tactical blunder on their part, eh?

13. What Gets Me The Most...........
In California, New York and Oregon, gay marriages have been put on hold pending a ruling from each state's Supreme Court. If the court says yes, then onward go the marriages. HEre in Massachusetts, our Supreme Court has already ruled that marriage between same-sex couples is legal. Amazing, we do it the right way, and those would would keep us from marrying fight it by launching a constitutional amendment. What the fuck! Leave us alone. Let us marry.

I'm in Missouri and we have been totally shamed by a southern state.
The gay marriage ban is sailing through our legislature with very little resistance from dems.

Pro gay marriage churches performing marriages and then taking it to court that the federal government is interfering with their right to practice their religion. Sounds good to me but i am not an attorney.

Here in Wisconsin the Republicans did the same to Democrats. Sauce for the goose anyone?

25. How convenient for the repugs on a wedge issue
This is so transparent. It's easy to walk out and show your base how mad you are that the law stands to protect minorities, but it looks good to your brainless constituents. Good for all the little lambs who stood for nothing, may the rot in hell standing on the backs of gay families and hurting the children of those families. It sickens me to think that gay parents have to explain to their children that people hate them in the name of God because of ignorance.
