27 Jewish graves vandalized in eastern France
Source: Ha'aretz

Police say vandals have smashed or overturned 27 gravestones at a Jewish cemetery in eastern France.

The gendarme service of the Bas-Rhin region says the damage was discovered at the cemetery in Wolfisheim on Wednesday.

No other details were immediately available.

Jewish grave sites around France are attacked sporadically by vandals, who leave gravestones broken or sprayed with anti-Semitic slogans.

In 2004 vandals painted swastikas and other anti-Semitic graffiti on headstones at a Jewish cemetery in eastern France, an act that drew the swift condemnation of the government.
During the last decade France has suffered a wave of violence against Jewish schools, synagogues and cemeteries that coincided with fighting in the Middle East. Many of the attacks have been blamed on young Muslims.
France is home to western Europe's largest Jewish and Muslim populations, and there are occasional attacks on their schools, cemeteries or places of worship.

4. thank you
People talk about Europe in that way on this site.

I lived in Strasbourg last semester. Everyone I met was very nice to me. I did not personally experience anti- semitism while I was over there, however some Jewish graves were vandalized in the Jewish cemetery there.

18. Very true.
A lot of DUers seem to think that Europe is an evolved utopia where everyone only works 5 hours week, sits in cafes smoking unfiltered cigarettes, discusses philosophy and receives free money and blowjobs from the government.

"I'm sooooo out of this country"

11. But, but, but...
France is like the most progressive country on Earth & all. They'd never ever oppress Jews or Muslims over there. :sarcasm:

Face it France lovers on DU, that country is very bigoted. I don't know why the Freepers and tea partiers still ridicule the French when they have a lot in common such as being racist, anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim, and anti-socialist. Yes, they were anti-Bush years back, but that country has swung very far to the right very quickly. How far to the right? More than most here would think. Far right enough that they'd probably admire lawmakers like Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, and Michele Bachmann. I don't know if Fox news broadcasts there, but I'm sure they'd love Hannity and Huckabee, and definitely love Sarah Palin's guest appearances.

20. There is also this story about what is going on in Sweden of all places
I spoke with a Jewish woman from Sweden at my university campus Hillel about what is going on over there but I was reluctant to believe her. I guess I should have. This article was linked from the one you posted but it's not 24 hours old anymore so I shouldn't post it in a separate thread:

Jews reluctantly abandon Swedish city amid growing anti-Semitism

http://www.haaretz.com/jewish-world/jews-reluctantly-abandon-swedish-city-amid-growing-anti-semitism-1.301276

"Malmo, Sweden’s third-largest city, with a population of roughly 293,900 but only 760 Jews, reached a turning point of sorts in January 2009, during Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. A small, mostly Jewish group held a demonstration that was billed as a peace rally but seen as a sign of support for Israel. This peaceful demonstration was cut short when the demonstrators were attacked by a much larger screaming mob of Muslims and Swedish leftists who threw bottles and firecrackers at them as police seemed unable to stop the mounting mayhem.

“I was very scared and upset at the same time,” recalled Jehoshua Kaufman, a Jewish community leader. “Scared because there were a lot of angry people facing us, shouting insults and throwing bottles and firecrackers at the same time. The sound was very loud. And I was angry because we really wanted to go through with this demonstration, and we weren’t allowed to finish it.”

Alan Widman, who is a strapping 6-foot-tall member of parliament and a non-Jewish member of the Liberal Party who represents Malmo, said simply, “I have never been so afraid in my life.”

...

A continentwide study, conducted by the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research on Conflict and Violence at the University of Bielefeld in Germany, released in December 2009, found that that 45.7% of the Europeans surveyed agree somewhat or strongly with the following statement: “Israel is conducting a war of extermination against the Palestinians.” And 37.4% agreed with this statement: “Considering Israel’s policy, I can understand why people do not like Jews.”

21. Sick. Sad.
The more things change, the more some things refuse to change and remain the same.

Thank you, Behind the Aegis, for posting this to remind all of us that this shit is still happening.
