EG plans to use death penalty
Erika Gibson

Pretoria - Equatorial Guinea says it will apply the death penalty to 14 men - seven of them South Africans - arrested for plotting a coup if a court sentences them to this.

"If it's necessary to kill them, then do so. We have not abolished the death sentence. If it's necessary to kill them, then we will kill them."

So says President Obiang Nguema from Equatorial Guinea regarding the group of alleged mercenaries in custody in the country.

This is the first time Equatorial Guinea has spoken out about the group. Nguema said the men had maps of Malabo (the capital) in their possession when arrested, as well as communication equipment and speedboats.
