Temporary Hiring Freeze at Some Homeland Security Agencies

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Homeland Security Department said on Friday that it is putting a hold on new hires at two bureaus for a few weeks while it analyzes whether they're spending more than their budgets allow.

"The American people have a right to know that they are being protected, and that their money is being wisely spent," Sensenbrenner said. The chairman requested the results of the auditing team's investigation and its proposed solutions by April 9.
New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney, chair of the House Democratic Task Force on Homeland Security, said the problem will hamper efforts to prevent terrorists entering the country.
"This administration has spared no expense to open new firehouses in Iraq but won't even keep our Department of Homeland Security solvent," Maloney said in a statement.
