Report on Pennsylvania natural gas drilling tallies 1,400 violations
Source: Associated Press

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Companies rushing to drill for natural gas in the rich Marcellus Shale reserve a mile below Pennsylvania have tallied more than 1,400 violations of state laws since January 2008, according to an environmental advocacy group’s analysis of state data.

The Pennsylvania Land Trust Association said 952, about two-thirds, of the violations caused or had the potential to cause environmental damage, from chemical spills to improperly lined sludge pits. The rest were classified as safety or administrative violations.

More than half the environmental violations involved improper construction of a wastewater pit or improper control of erosion during earth-moving activity, both of which can result in water pollution. One in six of the environmental violations, or 154, dealt with industrial waste spills while one in 10, or 100, dealt with unspecified violations of the state’s waterway protection law.

The modern-day gas rush has poured billions of dollars into the Marcellus Shale region, which underlies New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio. Many residents have complained the drilling techniques used are unsafe, but the drilling companies say that’s untrue.

1. That's ok, because here in the state with the city of brotherly
love, the only 'brothers' who count are business men.

2. Massive deregulation is the only way to ensure the safety of this energy resource
Deregulation and tax cuts for the rich, of course.

4. One of our clients is an oil & gas exploration company
with vested interest in Williamsport, PA where it's smack dab in the middle of the Shale.

I am praying every day that the owner (which I despise - he's an Rethuglican Eagle donor for Chimp) declares bankruptcy and gets out of the business altogether, although I know the owner has been in business for a long time, and will probably find another virgin oil property to rape instead.

5. There must be some clean water left!
Apparently the coal companies missed some of the clean water. Next up is oil drilling in Lake Erie.

6. And boy are the companies spreading the propaganda in this state
Massive ad buys. Hired ex Gov & Homeland Security "color code" head Tom Ridge. And at least among many of the pols here it is bipartisan. Bunch of Rendell's people have gone to work for the gas companies as well. Sick.

7. This is happening on my cousin's land
He's got a cabin on it. Nothing fancy, like his Dad had (and they had to sell). THere's Amish people all around him and their farms. Makes me worried.

8. You should be worried...
We should all be worried, it's happening all over, and there's plans to bottle the gas and sell it in Europe...poison the people to make a profit...
