Oil spill: BP nears deal to continue drilling in Gulf of Mexico

BP was on Tuesday night close to safeguarding its future in the Gulf of Mexico as it neared a break-through deal aimed at smoothing relations with the Obama administration.

The deal with the White House would allow BP to guarantee its $20bn (£13bn) clean-up fund against revenues from its operations in the Gulf, which account for approximately 10pc of its oil and gas business.

If the deal were to be agreed – it remains one of a number of solutions being discussed – it would all but guarantee BP’s future in the Gulf, despite efforts by certain members of the US Congress to force the company away from US shores.

The talks also came as it emerged that BP renewed its insurance policy to cover its directors just ahead of the explosion on the rig above the Macondo well on April 20

2. BP is killing a well

but there's no way they're abandoning that reservoir of crude. They'll sink another well to tap it.

They'll do what it takes to get permission to drill. Slick "I (heart) the Gulf" ads, payoffs to congress, whatever.

3. There's really not much the govt. could do to lock them out

As long as ANYONE is allowed to drill in the gulf it would be exceedingly difficult for the govt. to discriminate against one particular company, even given the fact that their negligence caused this horrific disaster.

12. people in louisiana want the drilling to resume, we just want it done safely

there's no reason we can't do this safely, and having seen the cost of fucking up, it's hard to believe anyone would be better motivated than BP to improve their safety record

oil is valuable -- apparently it's valuable enough to spend soldier's lives in the middle east

we would rather develop our oil in the gulf, we just want it done SAFELY, with the alarms operational, so folks don't get freakin' blown up alive while they're trying to bring us the energy we need for a decent life

oil is a good product, as people would quickly remember if/when we go back to coal, it does need safeguards tho

there has to be a way to make this work, many families in louisiana have both fishers and oil workers in their families, and they respect everyone's need for decent work that pays well

i do not understand the attitudes of states like california and florida that believe the oil should not be drilled, i guess they are just such rich states that they can afford to leave a valuable resource under the ground and instead have poor people killed in iraq for them, she sniffed, but it just doesn't seem like all that moral a stance to me...i don't get it to be honest...it just seems wrong somehow to say, "oh we're too good to drill OUR oil, we'll take YOURS"
