Authorities investigating 20 attacks, 5 deaths in three states since May

FLINT, Mich. — Authorities in Atlanta have arrested a man in connection with a three-state serial stabbing spree that resulted in at least 20 attacks and five deaths, many in Michigan.
Police in Leesburg, Va., said Thursday the man was arrested late Wednesday afternoon and was being held on unrelated charges.

Leesburg Police Chief Joseph Price said that over the past week, investigators from the Michigan Task Force and several other law enforcement agencies chased down countless leads as they poured in from the public, NBC News reported. Late Wednesday, he said, one tip led to a lead in Atlanta.

Officer Chris Jones said authorities believed the man could be the suspect and has ties to Leesburg. Police "have information that he was trying to leave the country," Jones said.

Detroit NBC affiliate WDIV said on its website that police there had store surveillance video showing that the man worked at a party store in the community of Beecher, north of Flint.

A possible suspect in a string of 20 stabbings that terrorized people across three states and left five dead was arrested at an airport as he tried to board a plane for Israel, officials said Thursday.

The man was arrested late Wednesday and was being held on unrelated charges, police in Leesburg, Va., said.

He was arrested at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport where he was trying to board a Delta Air Lines flight to Tel Aviv, Israel, said Rafael Lemaitre, a spokesman at U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The man has ties to Flint, Mich., where the attacks began May 24, and to Leesburg, the site of three similar attacks last week, Leesburg Police Officer Chris Jones said.

He is an Israeli citizen who is in the U.S. legally, according to a law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the ongoing investigation.

2. The man is a serial killer

I don't understand why, with 5 deaths, this hasn't been characterized as such. When I first heard the story of a serial "stabber" it did not catch my attention. When I heard of the deaths I listened more closely and was more alarmed. He has been at this since May and only now does the merit nationwide attention. How many of those five men might have lived if the alarm was sounded sooner? Is it because the victims were all male or majority black?

These attacks were reported on locally until the "pattern" became evident. When the tie-in became clear, then the FBI/Local police could issue their larger warning. This individual went to several states, VA, MI and GA, plus some others. When it became apparent this man could move freely about from state to state and attack people at literally his "convenience" it was time to get out a national bulletin.


His attacks may well have been racially motivated, but the response by law enforcement wasn't racially motivated.

10. Suspected Michigan serial killer arrested

Elias Abuelazam, a 33-year-old Israeli national was served with a warrant charging him with assault with intent to murder in an attack on a man. More charges are likely to follow as authorities believe he is responsible for 18 stabbings, 5 that were fatal.

Officials believe that Abuelazam may be responsible for attacking 18 men in Michigan, Ohio and Virginia. All but two of the 18 victims were black and at this time the police do not know if the attacks were racially motivated.
