The Indus river is now 18 miles wide due to the floods

Flood levels in Pakistan are expected to surge even higher along parts of the already dangerously swollen Indus river. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said "major peaks" are expected on Friday and next week in Punjab and Sindh provinces.

The region's worst flooding in 80 years has affected 14 million people and killed 1,600, according to the UN.

Doctors say that malaria, diarrhoea and gastroenteritis are growing threats.

As a US ship with more helicopters and 1,000 Marines arrived to boost the relief efforts, Pakistan's political leaders pledged that all aid distribution would be transparent. Prime Minister Gilani said: "Whatever you give, we will give an account of every single penny."

3. I had not seen this Turborama
I did read about the Indus River earlier but just skimmed the article. So I appreciate this OP. Thank you for the map, it helps to be able to see where everything is.

I wonder will India help at all, or are relations too strained for them to offer assistance even at a time like this?

Thank you so much for all the work you have done on this story, which I think is one of the biggest stories happening right now. For so many reasons. Climate change, the war in Afghanistan, the conflict between India and Pakistan, the possible rise again of radical Islamic groups in Pakistan as a result of being able to help.

It is a very important story and I look forward to your posts about it, so thanks again for the work you do.
