Dayton Tea Party activist starts conservative business exchange

About 30 local businesses are participating in a program to link conservative consumers with businesses owned by conservatives to help support the Tea Party.

Donald Hutchinson, a businessman and Tea Party supporter, calls his initiative the Tea Party Exchange Inc.

Tea Party supporters who obtain a TPX-Great American card — similar to a customer-loyalty card consumers can attach to key rings — and show it at a participating business can get a discount on the company’s services. The local merchant then gives 5 percent of the sale revenue to the local Tea party chapter to help fund rallies.

Hutchinson is co-founder and president of Essex HR and Associates, a Washington Twp. human resources consultant. He said he plans to speak at the national March on DC Tea Party rally Sept. 11 in Washington, D.C., and will promote the Tea Party Exchange concept to other chapters of the Tea Party, whose members advocate for reducing taxes and cutting spending and the size of government.

4. I've not heard of it in Oklahoma...

but during the primaries just a few weeks ago, I made mental notes of businesses that put any Republican signs on their actual property. Sometimes one can't tell, because signs were pretty well bordering on public property/private property...but since I cycle a lot, I got a good look at which businesses supported which candidates. The Republican supporting businesses won't get a dime from my husband or I.

5. This is exactly why...

I keep my personal political feelings completely separate from business. That's not to say I don't try to patronize ethical, union and US based businesses. But if I were to promote my business as liberal and supporting liberal causes, I would likely lose a significant part of my sales and soon be out of business. Better to lay low and keep the two separate (and support lefty causes quietly:)).

I never had any problems at any of those places. But now that "Christian" increasingly means "crazy extreme conservative", I may have to think again about places that advertise their devotion to Jesus.

And it looks like most of the businesses (with the exception of a restaurant) probably have a specific, like-minded clientele anyway, so they're just pandering to their own crowd.

Just the same as the Christian Yellow Pages. People like to hang out with their own, especially if they think they're being made targets by society at large. Let them have their silly Members Only bullshit. Plenty of other places to patronize.

The store owner has to sell their product/service at a discount and then give 5% of the sale to the Tea Party?!? They'll need to get a good bump in customers to make up for the per-sale losses. And I have to wonder how many of the owner-participants recognize the irony in this Tea Party Tax.
