Fall In Support For Afghan War Worrisome: Jones
Source: Agence France-Presse

President Barack Obama's national security advisor has voiced concern about Americans growing weary of the war in Afghanistan, despite what he called apparent "elements of success."

Asked in an interview whether US engagement in Afghanistan risked the same loss of support that undermined the war in Vietnam, James Jones replied that such a prospect was "very worrisome."

"The biggest fear would be that we might get to a point where we decide that we can't turn this violence around," the retired US Marine Corps general told CNN on Thursday, adding that he doubted that would happen.

A USA Today/Gallup opinion poll released earlier this month indicated that 60 percent of Americans thought the situation for the United States in Afghanistan was "very or moderately bad."

Public support for Obama's management of the conflict meanwhile fell to 36 percent, from 48 percent in February.

1. no, calling Afghanistan a 'war' is what is worrisome, and even further, the fact that
we never should have invaded in the first place.

4. I find it more worrisome that this criminal operation was EVER supported.
Sounds like the real concern is that the bullshit propaganda used to build support for mass murder is no longer working.

19. You are not being sensible about this, Jokerman
What happened to your legendary pragmatism?

We do have our work cut out for us this November. There are some good candidates on the ballot that we need to GTVO so that complacency doesn't bite them at the polls, as we saw when Ballard was elected mayor.

Time for beer!

7. President Obama is in a no-win situation with Afghanistan
Bush SHOULD have had this all wrapped up way before Obama took office, and probably would have had he not taken his eye off the ball and wasted all of our resources in Iraq. So what's a President to do? Either finish a job that should have been finished years ago, despite the fact that it's gotten exceedingly difficult and unpopular, or cut his/our losses and get out ASAP while leaving a corrupt/inept government in charge which will no doubt fall back into the hands of the Taliban. I doubt if any other President in history has faced so many totally screwed up messes left by his predecessor.

But yes, it's time to cut our losses, get out, and let the chips fall where they may in regards to which corrupt dictator takes control of the Afghan government.

8. There's just something about an endless, costly, murderous, dehumanizing, losing war that ...
makes it lose popular support.

I don't know. I just can't understand it. ;-)

12. Ergo the REPUBLICANS would stop it.
No way Cornyn, Sessions, Boner, ALexander, McConnell, etc: will let their grandkids anywhere near an IED. McCain? Oh yeah, he would shove the rifle in their hands and buy them a plane ticket to Antarctica if we were at war with walruses.

15. The Soviets couldn't defeat Afghanistan, & neither will we.
Edited on Fri Aug-13-10 01:20 PM by Dulcinea
We're doing nothing but throwing good money after bad--money that could be used to create jobs, provide health care & housing for Americans. But then no defense contractors will make any money. Oh, wait...

Have we learned nothing from history? Afghanistan is still run by warlords, as it has been for 1,000 years! That's not going to change overnight for us or anyone else.

"Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it." (I'm paraphrasing, but you get the idea.)

17. Fuck the "elements of success". Stop spending all this fucking money on the military.
WTF don't they get about our socioeconomic condition here at home? War and the military is the priority for them. We don't mean shit to them ...they don't even need our votes anymore what with all the hackable voting machines.
