Del.icio.us Facebook Digg Reddit Newsvine Twitter FarkIt Type Size A A A NEW ORLEANS — The Justice Department has opened a new civil rights investigation into the alleged beating of two men by New Orleans Police in the days after Hurricane Katrina.
Justice Department spokeswoman Xochitl Hinojosa (So-chi E-no-ho-sa) on Friday told the Associated Press that federal authorities are investigating the alleged beatings of Ernest Bell and Robert Williams. She declined to elaborate.
The investigation follows a series of articles published in The Times-Picayune in which several NOPD officers scuffled with journalists who witnessed parts of a violent confrontation between police and two handcuffed men, according to the first-person accounts of Times-Picayune city editor Gordon Russell and Canadian journalist Lucas Oleniuk.
