Taiwan's Lien to Challenge Presidential Vote
Taiwan's Lien to Challenge Presidential Vote
Mon Mar 29, 2004 02:25 AM ET

By Alice Hung
TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan's defeated presidential candidate, Lien Chan, was expected to file lawsuits Monday to contest the hotly disputed election, paving the way for a full recount that could ease a bitter political crisis.

President Chen Shui-bian narrowly defeated his Nationalist opponent by just 30,000 votes out of more than 13 million cast in the March 20 poll. An election-eve assassination attempt lightly wounded Chen and, Lien says, created a significant sympathy vote.

After Lien led half a million supporters in a protest outside the presidential palace Saturday, Chen said he would agree to a judicial recount and accept the outcome. He has asked Lien to formally contest the election in court.

Lien's lawyers plan to file two invalidation lawsuits with the high court, which could lead to a recount and possibly a new election if sufficient evidence is provided.

3. You mean file lawsuits?
Funny, I thought we did that. Silly me. I still have no idea what people think could have been done that wasn't done.

4. This was not, to my knowledge, a corrupt election.
The KMT is corrupt beyond belief. People were found at their protest rally with money given to them by the KMT to attend to make their support seem stronger.

6. I Saw Some Coverage of the Dispute on a Taiwanese Network Last Night
My girlfriend translated a little of it, although she wasn't familiar with the specifics.

It's even more contentious an issue than Florida 2000. Partisan feelings between the blue and green parties are so intense that one of the commentators was suggesting that the Taiwanese need "a brother" to mediate the dispute and supervise either a recount or a re-vote. A "brother" in this case meant the US.

The idea of Taiwan asking the US to mediate an election is ironic. Where were they four years ago?
