Scientists dispute White House claim that spilled BP oil has vanished
Source: The Guardian

The White House is facing a growing challenge over its claim that most of the oil from the Deepwater disaster has disappeared from the Gulf of Mexico, as at least three independent teams of scientists reported new evidence of oil persisting deep under the surface of the sea.

Earlier this month government scientists reported that about 75% of the oil had been captured, burned off, evaporated or broken down in the Gulf.

But University of South Florida scientists, returning from a 10-day research voyage, said they found oil on the ocean floor in the DeSoto canyon, a prime spawning ground for fish far to the east of BP's rogue oil well.

Preliminary results suggested that oil was getting into the phytoplankton, the microscopic plants at the bottom of the Gulf food chain.

5. I think paid BP sockpuppets (R) come on to DU to post stuff making it seem
as if everything in the Gulf i hunky dory.

Then their BS gets blown out of the water by reality.

But still, they keep posting. Diversionary Bullshit.

7. I talked with
someone who used to work on an oil rig and he said those dipersents don't disperse anything. They are just intended to make the oil sink to the bottom where it can't be seen... Hmmm conspiracy theory? Maybe...

13. The University of South Florida scientists
are working under a BP grant of $10 million.

And nobody I've seen is "making it seem as if everything in the Gulf is hunky dory." That's a rather typical, diametric argument around here -- in arguing that everything is a total disaster, the apocalypse mongers paint any opposition as an argument that everything is hunky dory. But in between, there's rational assessment, which few seem interested in.

8. Obama has pissed this left wing progressive off...........
many times but I never thought that he would politicize, Science. If he doesn't order an investigation on this to establish the base line facts, we are seeing a new low in the Administration. This would be very telling and I would say that we are through the looking glass with Obama. Up is down, right is left, etc. God damn it, I haven't heard word one, yet.

10. God damn, can't believe how wrong Obama is on this
What is wrong with the man? WE know he's not stupid, but he's sure acting that way with the meaningful frolic in the oceean for the spotlights, telling people to eat the food, no problems here. He's done lots of things wrong, but his shilling for BP has pushed me over the edge. I would never vote Repug, but it's going to take a really awful opponent (Palin, Gingrich for example) to motivate me to actually vote for this person that is rejecting sanity and science to please his big oil masters.

:grr:
