No charges in Stephen Hawking abuse probe
No charges in Stephen Hawking abuse probe

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CAMBRIDGE, England -- Police on Monday announced they would close their investigation into possible abuse of famed astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, saying they found no evidence he was mistreated.

Hawking was questioned by detectives earlier this month about alleged abuses that reportedly left him with a series of unexplained injuries.

"I can find no evidence to substantiate any assertion that anyone has perpetrated any criminal acts against Professor Hawking," said Detective Superintendent Michael Campbell, who led the investigation.

"This matter has now been brought to a close," he added.

1. This is good... i hope.
I was really hoping that noone would be evil enough to beat up a person confined to a wheelchair, let alone one of the greatest minds we have.

3. no it doesn't...
...but if the victim will not speak up for himself, then I'm not sure what more the police can do. Hawking denies the injuries are the result of abuse. It sounds like a case of a former wife suspecting abuse by the current wife/nurse -- really hairy stuff. Reports of repeated injuries, over 4 years, are indeed disturbing. I hope Hawking is not being manipulated or threatened. Don't know what more to say.

4. I can't help but think of that Monty Python skit.
Fratelli (?) brother: "Oh, this is a nice voice synthesizer you have here, Professor Hawking. I'd hate to see anything bad happen to it."

5. Personal Stephen Hawking Story
Edited on Mon Mar-29-04 08:16 PM by boobooday
His caretaker was (still is?) a young woman who was his nurse. He married her.

He used to come to the university where I worked a lot. A professor I knew saw him in the food court at the student union. His wife was there, helping him eat. She reattached him to all his stuff (the poor man) and then he told her he had decided he wanted some ice cream too. My friend said his wife threw a fit and started screaming at him right there in front of everyone. "I don't care if you're Stephen F*CKING Hawking" she screamed, "No F*CKING ICE CREAM!" He said the whole scene was really weird, and she was very verbally abusive to him.

SO, when I hear this story, I think maybe it is true.
