World Church of the Creator teetering on last legs, experts say
World Church of the Creator teetering on last legs, experts say
By ALLISON FARRELL of the Missoulian State Bureau

Sculptor Tim Holmes stands in his
Helena studio recently with a few
pieces he created from World Church
of the Creator books. Holmes is
coordinating an art project that
will use 4,100 books a former member
of the movement sold to the Montana
Human Rights Network.

University of Montana sociology professor Rob Balch has been in some strange social situations, so taking a handful of students up to the annual rally of the World Church of the Creator in Superior one summer was nothing unusual.

But Balch, who studies cults and hate groups, hasn't kept up with the white supremacist "Creativity Movement" that had taken root in Mineral County.

"I think they were really overrated in terms of their size and danger," Balch said, adding that the rendezvous he attended was "tiny."

"Mostly, it was people hanging out and talking and eating really bad food, like Kentucky Fried Chicken and doughnuts," Balch said. "Nothing much went on."

1. They were pretty scary for a bit -
They came up this way for some poorly-attended RAHOWA-type rallies (usually 15 supporters vs. 300+ counterprotesters).

Their charismatic leader is in jail now - for plotting to kill a judge I think? That might have taken some wind out of their sails.

3. Last legs?
I didn't know they had a single leg to begin with. Fortunately, not too many Americans are into the hard-core hate industry yet.

Goodbye, you fascist sickos.

4. Did they not get their check from the taxpayers?
Seems like the perfect group to benefit from Bush's "Faith Based" initiative program. Fits in Perfectly with the GOP's "Southern Strategy".

Oh, well. Hate groups and domestic terrorism will come back after President Kerry is sworn in.

6. Southern Poverty Law Center
The Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Ala., has done a great job of monitoring hate groups and crippling many of them with lawsuits. You can find info about the World Church of the Creator and other hate groups on their web site, and much more.

The KFC and doughnuts are an amusing side note, since the WCOTC's founder, Ben Klassen, espoused "salubrious living," including a diet of raw organic foods and abstinence from drugs, alcoholic beverages, medicines, vitamins, and refined sugar.

So if you're in the health food store and see a fellow shopper wearing hunting fatigues and a Confederate flag cap, beware!

7. Morris Dees came to speak at SIU Law while Hale was enrolled.
That was a fun little show-down when Morris Dees scanned the audience to spot Matthew Hale. Later, when he took questions from the audience, he made sure Hale knew that his little hate group was in the cross-hairs of the SPLC.

Honestly, this organization is a joke, but they keep getting press. They have only about 20 dues paying members. Hale was turned in by his security chief, who was an FBI informer. Good choice for security chief, huh? And after threatening to kill a Federal judge, I doubt Hale will be getting out anytime soon. And without Hale, there is no World Church of the Creator.

It's sheep members will find another charismatic leader to manipulate them, and that new group will be squashed too. Bye bye, WCotC, we won't miss you.
