NewsTimeIran’s Defence Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi said the country would today announce a defence project if “great importance”.
Stating that the country would no longer need any aid from other countries, Vahidi said the project had heightened Iran’s defence capability. The Mehr News Agency reported that Iran would test-fire a new grade of missile today. This comes as the Iran begins fuelling its first nuclear energy plant in Bushehr, in the country’s south.
The plant is being mooted as an energy centre though some Western sceptics believe Iran still harbour nuclear weapon ambitions. Iran is believed to be looking to enrich uranium to weapons grade level. The United States has been a vocal opponent of Iran’s plans to enrich its own uranium. White House spokesperson Robert Gibbs said this month :” Russia is providing the fuel, and taking the fuel back out. It, quite clearly, I think, underscores that Iran does not need its own enrichment capability if its intentions, as it states, are for a peaceful nuclear program”.
Russia has called the Bushehr facility :” the most important anchor holding Iran to the non-proliferation regime”.
