Qatar calls for united (Global) effort to help Pakistan
Source: Gulf Times

Monday 8/23/2010 12:16 AM Doha Time -

Qatar has called for a united global effort to help flood ravaged Pakistan, praising the tangible efforts made so far to assist the South Asian country.

Addressing a UN meeting entitled “Strengthening of the co-ordination of humanitarian and disaster relief assistance of the United Nations, including special economic assistance”, Ambassador Nasser Abdul Aziz al-Nasser, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations at the United Nations General Assembly, lauded the president of the UN General Assembly and the secretary general of the United Nations for convening the important meeting to assist Pakistan.

He said: “I would like also to commend the concrete efforts of the United Nations and the international community and charitable organisations and the member-states who promptly responded without any delay to help the people of Pakistan in the aftermath of the disaster that befell Pakistan since the beginning of this month. Such a response from all segments of the international community and its institutions is praiseworthy. However, the scale of the mass multi-dimensional destruction at the humanitarian, environmental and economic levels, which some analysts say, exceeded the impact of the Tsunami disaster, requires further efforts by the international community. Thus, we hope that our meeting today will draw a united effort towards helping the people of Pakistan of whom approximately 20mn people have been displaced”.

In his statement Ambassador al-Nasser said: “Under the guidance of HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar, Qatar was among the first of those nations who immediately sent aid on receiving news of the floods, to deal with the immediate effects of the disaster. Currently, the State of Qatar is planning to provide assistance during the stages of recovery, reconstruction and development.

“I would like to note that the assistance provided by the State of Qatar is not only from the government, but also the non-governmental and charitable organisations in my country which have launched fund-raising campaigns collecting around $8mn. This reflects the sincere solidarity of the people of Qatar who joined other people of the world to help the people of Pakistan.

1. It's very promising to see countries pulling together...
To help those in need, unfortunately more is needed.

The citizens of Pakistan are desperate.
