RNC Committeewoman: Obama Told Muslims That He Was A Muslim

The Republican ranks have, by and large, cautiously avoided weighing in on recent poll numbers showing that a healthy portion of the American public believes that President Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Wary of the cultural sensitivities such discussions entail, the de facto response seems to be the one offered by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Sunday: "The president says he's a Christian," McConnell said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "I take him at his word. I don't think that's in dispute."

There have been a few notable exceptions. Congressional candidate Phil Ganley said last week that he did not have "a position on whether he's a Muslim" only to walk back his remarks amidst the uproar. No one in the official GOP tent, however, has fully embraced the rumor. Until now.

Last Friday, a Republican National Committee woman Kim Lehman, responding to an article about the polls in Politico, accused the publication of trying "to protect Obama" by denying his true religious heritage.

1. Apparently, because he wasn't foaming at the mouth
and screaming "I'M A CHRISTIAN I'M A CHRISTIAN" when he said "I'm a Christian", the teabggers are upset.

2. yup, this sure sounds like it.....
"Now part of this conviction is rooted in my own experience. I'm a Christian, but my father came from a Kenyan family that includes generations of Muslims. As a boy, I spent several years in Indonesia and heard the call of the azaan at the break of dawn and at the fall of dusk. As a young man, I worked in Chicago communities where many found dignity and peace in their Muslim faith."

5. "Neither Lehman nor anyone else would claim Republican gubernatorial candidate Terry Branstad's
not really a Christian because his mother was Jewish. Yet for some reason, it's not enough for Lehman that Obama has been baptized, regularly attended Christian churches for many years and was sworn in on a Christian bible."

7. I bet their are some on the far right that do make a note of his Jewish mother
What is strange is that Christianity is an evangelical religion - they seek converts. You would think those who are Christians by choice should be held in high esteem.

But, I suspect this is at least 99% political. If you looked in the right wing sewers in 2004, you saw many people claiming not just that John Kerry was really Jewish, but that so was Teresa! In John Kerry's case, he was baptised Catholic as a baby. His FATHER was baptized Catholic as a baby and his mother's family has both Puritan roots (including the first Governor of MA, whose "shining city" words Noonan put in Reagan's speech) and more mainstream Protestant roots including at least one minister among the early Forbes. As to his wife, Maria Teresa was a convent educated Catholic.

So, it is not just Obama's unique background.

8. Very true - both trying to make people question if they even know who he is
After all, your birth information and your religion are pretty basic parts of a biography. They are being used to question his very core. How can you believe someone who lies about who he is. (Is he even really Barrack Obama?)

11. Remember the scary 'devil seducer' in Rosemary's Baby?
Well, I heard from a guy that lived in Hell for a year that Obama is the Muslim nephew of...THAT GUY! I'm so torn between who to call with this sensitive information - Sarah Palin or Louie Gohmert.

15. Wow! Religion via genetics!
...from the bigger article on Huff Post:

"Obama's speech in Cairo did include discussion about his father's Muslim faith."

I never knew! You "get" your religion via your genes!

Oh Missy KimmyGOBPer...you is CRAZY.
