Associated Press / Dallas Morning NewsMexican troops have discovered the bodies of 72 people, believed to be migrants from Central and South America and victims of the Zetas drug gang, on an isolated ranch about 90 miles from the Texas border, authorities said Wednesday.
Officials said the 58 men and 14 women were found Tuesday after a daylong search of a rural swath near the town of San Fernando in Tamaulipas state, where a bloody feud between the Gulf cartel and Zetas has produced an air of lawlessness and widespread fear.
Authorities did not specify a possible motive for the killings. Drug cartels frequently kidnap migrants and threaten to kill them unless they pay fees for crossing their territory.
Information was based largely on the testimony of a migrant from Ecuador who survived the slaughter. Although wounded by a gunshot to the neck, the migrant made his way Monday to a highway checkpoint and summoned marines for help.
