Toyota to recall 1.1 million Corolla, Matrix models prone to stalling

Toyota Motor Corp. today issued a recall of 1.1 million Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles from the 2005-08 model years after more than 1,000 complaints of stalling. In a statement, Toyota said it was addressing some engine control modules that may have been improperly made. All the affected vehicles were sold in North America.

Cracks may develop at solder points or on the electronic component used to protect circuits against excessive voltage -- in some cases stopping the engine while the vehicle is being driven, the statement said.

The announcement today raises Toyota recalls since November 2009 to about 12.3 million vehicles worldwide and 10.5 million in the United States, most for sudden acceleration, Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons said.

3. Sigh of relief here. My Matrix failed on me just 2 weeks ago.

My mechanic said to find out if there was a recall because of the strange "check engine" readings he got. I guess this answers that, and I will not have to pay out of pocket for what he called a major expense. Whew.

But it pisses me off that I bought a Toyota for reliability. Ya just never know.

The agency said the module failures could lead to problems that include stalling, the failure of the engine to start or harsh shifting.

Some of the owners who filed complaints said the automaker refused to help them. “Dealer informed me there is a T.S.B. from Toyota and it is a known issue and common problem,” wrote one, referring to a technical service bulletin. “My car is out of the eight year or 80,000 mile warranty, so it would be around $1,000 to fix. Frustrated as this is a known issue which has seriously safety concerns and I have to pay $1,000 to fix their issue.”

Toyota told the agency it had approved 4,200 warranty claims involving the electronic control module. Brian Lyons, a Toyota spokesman, said the automaker was cooperating with the agency.

11. We have been getting A LOT of Yodas in, and the trades are just sitting

some are now over 90 days and headed to auction (along with the FLOOD of others there already). The value has dropped about 15% since Spring.

13. The Vibe is involved too

GM is also recalling 200,000 Pontiac Vibes for the same problem. The Vibe (which is similar to the Matrix) was built under a joint effort between General Motors and Toyota at a (now closed) factory in Fremont, CA. The engine control modules in question were made by Delphi Corporation of Troy, MI.
