Clarke book flying off almost all San Diego (CA) shelves
Even 3,000 miles outside the Washington Beltway, the controversial book "Against All Enemies: Inside America's War on Terror" is a must-read.

That is, if you can find a copy.

Over the weekend, most local Barnes & Noble stores were out. The few copies at the Borders in Mission Valley were being held for customers who called ahead. Even the Controversial Bookstore on University Avenue in San Diego didn't have any copies. The stores could offer only to take orders.

(snip)

"Against All Enemies" has topped the national best-seller lists since it was released March 22. Clarke quickly became one of the most talked-about people in America as he appeared on a number of news programs and testified before the independent commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

(snip)

Republicans have sought to discredit the 53-year-old as a disgruntled partisan out to sell books. On Friday, Republican congressional leaders announced they will seek to declassify 2002 congressional testimony by Clarke, suggesting his appraisal of Bush's performance had changed and he might have lied under oath.

11. I understand the Dems have a majority in S.D. County
However, the Union/Tribune is practically a KKK publication.

13. Actually the Union Tribune covers national news
a lot better than other publications and provides a wide spectrum of opinion pages. Perhaps because it is isolated from the LA Metro area, and because the LA Times is just a shadow of its former self, it feels some responsibility.

North County Times also is quite diversified. The fact that some readers complained about its "liberal bias" has to mean something.

I find both to be a lot more comprehensive in covering local, state and national (SDUT also international) then, say, the Orange County Register and the LA Daily News.

17. No way. Union-Trib is a GOP mouthpiece to the max!!
I won't even let them throw a FREE copy on my yard because I am so sick and disgusted with their GOP bias. How on earth did you come away with that perception??

19. I just read it online
And find it quite informative - the news section, that is - as well as the business one.

On its opinion page it occasionally has some liberal opinions, like Goldsborough (sp?)

21. S. D. is Pete Wilson Country: America's Finest Tourist Plantation
Pete Wilson was mayor of S.D.
Pete Wilson was the CA. Gov. that preceded Davis.
When Wilson was Gov. he ran deficits but managed
to get re-elected by scapgoating immigrants with
Prop.187 and printing IOUs.

Oh,CA. also raised sales taxes under Wilson to balance the budget.

Pete Wilson helped alienate a large segment of Latino voters from the Republican party. Morever, parts of Prop. 187 were declared unconstitutional and the Fed came down on Calif. IOU because only Congress has the legal right to print money.

And how was he punished for his performance?

First he got re-elected.

Then Arnold appointed Wilson as his re-call campaign manager!

I guess Arnold couldn't find any other Republican to head his campaign? So just had to go with Pete.

Has San Diego honored Dr. King by naming a street or building after him?

I'm still waiting. Drip drip drip, but I need a full glass.

Oh well, here's hoping that Bush suddenly doesn't become the "underdog" that Americans start rooting for.

5. I will definitely be reading this book.
I guess I'm just surprised. That things finally started to take a toll on the Evil Empire. I remember feeling, and I know a lot of other people here on the DU felt that this President is impervious. They called him the "teflon" president, meaning no amount of pointing out of the truth could make a difference.

Maybe it has.

8. The Friday before the book came out (pre-60 Min), I stopped in at a nearby
bookstore (college town, liberal bookstore) and asked if they would have the book on Monday (the release date). She had never heard of it and checking the computer revealed that they "had one copy on order and it is reserved". Not too surprising they ran short at most places... sounds like people seriously underestimated the impact. I have my copy and am reading it now - It is making me crazy to hear people that have not read the book criticize Clarke for profiteering and lying. This is a great read and beyond credible.

9. I'm waiting for my copy to show up in the mail!
I can't want to read it. I ordered it from Amazon because I knew if I tried to go buy it from B&N I'd be distracted from the class I'm trying to finish. I figured by the time class is done (Wednesday) the book will be here and I'd have time to read it during my break. I can't wait!

10. It flew off Costco's shelves opening day.
All the conservative books were sitting on the shelf (looking pretty much unsold) last Monday. However, I had to search for one of the last copies of Clarke's book.

15. It's sold out at my bookstore too.
I was v. angry at all of the conservative books on the shelves until I realized it was probably because none of them were selling. Lots of copies of Hannity's book left. hahahaha.

the B&N. No copies available.

They had tons of Hannity's smiling mugshot books in the back, hidden as well as possible. But Clarke's book was all sold out.

22. Little neighborhood bookstore I visited this evening had some.
Their second load. They sold out the first bunch. A guy there told me that a couple of the store folks had to leave in the middle of the day, last week, and sneak off to "an undisclosed location" where they had another stash, and that nobody was talking about where they got it (probably another bookstore...) and he said as they were unloading the books onto the shelf, three more people bought them. They also had a VERY comprehensive selection of other liberal-leaning books, and still some copies of "House of Bush/House of Saud" (which I've heard will soon no longer be available in the U.S. - just read that on the net, not sure how true it actually is). But then again, this is a somewhat "alternative" bookstore and can always be relied upon to have the counter-culture stuff. The liberal stuff is all up front. Didn't see the Hannity book, but then again, it's probably in back. I know the clientele at this place. Most of 'em wouldn't even look at the Hannity book, no less buy a copy.

23. We need to give this time to sink into the public consciousness
Edited on Tue Mar-30-04 03:12 AM by jean
and not be discouraged by the right wing spin.

I wonder about people ordering it online/from bookstores and the slow arrival time...they haven't read or talked to friends or family about it yet and the book has been out for over a week now.

People who have read it may hang on every word the man speaks and tape every tv appearance. Those who haven't might not be tuning in to the tv spots and are, for the most part, uninformed.

The full effect of Clarke's gift will develop over time, maybe many weeks. It reminds me of a slow motion sunrise with the rays reaching out and gradually you begin to see the color of things.
