HAVANA, March 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Haitian authorities detained Jean Michel Gaspard, the former police official blamed on the deaths of Spanish reporter Ricardo Ortega of Antena 3 Television and five demonstrators, reports reaching here from Haitian capital Port-au-Prince said Monday.
Gaspard's arrest was conducted on Sunday, reports from local Metropole Radio stated.
The death of Ortega and five demonstrators protesting the ouster of former President Jean Bertrand Aristide took place last March 7 during a march that was being covered by the Spanish reporter, who was fatally wounded by two shots.
Ortega, 37, was shot in the stomach along with South Florida Sun-Sentinel photographer Michael Laughlin, 37, who was shot in the shoulder and face. Both were taken to a hospital where Ortega died.
