North Korea threatens nuclear "holy war" if attacked

North Korea would answer any attack on it with a nuclear "holy war," the country's ambassador to Cuba said, according to official Chinese media, while the North's leader Kim Jong-il appeared to be visiting China.

The ambassador Kwon Sung-chol made the remarks on Friday at a ceremony marking 50 years of diplomatic ties between North Korea and Cuba, the same day that Pyongyang said it was open to returning to nuclear disarmament negotiations.

"If Washington and Seoul try to create a conflict on the Korean peninsula, we will respond with a holy war on the basis of our nuclear deterrent forces," Kwon said, according to China's Xinhua news agency on Saturday, in a story datelined Havana.

"Our government will strive for the denuclearization of the peninsula and the establishment of a lasting peace as the beginning of the reunification process of the two Koreas," said Kwon.

NK media is *heavily* controlled and one giant propaganda machine. Tourists are guided through a pre-planned course with guards and not allowed to wander and are sometimes treated with hostility, like having their cameras' memory cards seized if you're spotted with a camera in a restricted area. Tourist destinations are all prepared ahead of time, and dismantled once they leave. All to give a sense that the country is doing A-OK-- even thriving behind their secretive curtain from the rest of the world. On one hand I hear of tourists being chased by the poor, beaming when they're given even one measly US dollar, while on the other hand I hear they do well-enough for their position. I *seriously* doubt they really do possess nuclear arms, and prior "tests" were probably nothing more than large underground TNT detonations.

All talk and no bite. Though I'm not sure how much will China come to their aid. I'd wager they wouldn't if they deem it too expensive.

That both North Korea and Iran both beleave there one nuke made with 60 year old technology can do any long term damage to anything. Also do they realize it would take like just two or three of our nukes to destroy their entire country?

They make outlandish threats over and over, but in the end they won't do anything. Why? Because I believe China would abandon them. China isn't like Russia in some ideological war with the US, China wants to become the worlds #1 GDP and a superpower (if they aren't already). Going to war with the US and pretty much guaranteeing WW3 would kind of hinder that goal.

North Korea knows this. But they feel they have to threaten and look tough, so that their people think they are much more powerful than they really are.

"Holy" needn't have religious meaning. Holy or sacred can have secular content as well, such as the sacred rights of the people to national sovereignty or even holy war to defend a homeland against invasion.
