U.S. birth rate falls for second year in midst of recession

(CNN) -- The number of babies born in the United States dropped 2.6 percent last year, according to a recent study, the latest in a long list of falling indicators.

The birth rate, which takes into account changes in the population, fell to 13.5 births for every 1,000 people last year, from 13.9 births in 2008, and 14.3 births in 2007, according to a new report from the National Center for Health Statistics.

Some of the women postponing having children now will have them later, Cherlin said, while others never will. During the Great Depression in the 1930s, roughly 20 percent of women never had children -- a percentage that Cherlin predicts the United States will hit again.

The number of actual babies born in the United States dropped to 4,136,000 in 2009, from 4,247,000 in 2008, the statistics center said.

and it's predicted to double within 20 years anyway.The World Wildlife Fund predicts that we'll have run out of all natural resources at current consumption rates by 2045 (much earlier if population explodes). People don't seem to understand the horrifying implications of that.

I never understood how people can be worried about lower birth rates yet simultaneously fight against immigration. You get a larger population either way.

Educated and financially secure people are having less children while the uneducated poor are having more children. I think this is consistent across the board when it comes to America's various racial groups.

I'm also starting to get the be a dad bug. Just yesterday, one of my buddies sent me a text that his girlfriend just gave birth to their first kid. THis kind of blows my mind, because this guys was my "road dog". We used to live the Entourage life when I lived with him, his brother and their crew of unemployed trust fund babies in LA. Going out, partying every weekend, Vegas once a month, etc. Him becoming a dad has forced me to put my life in perspective. I do have a girlfriend, nice career and all the good stuff that comes with being well paid, but having a little munchkin around would be nice. Unfortunately, the girl I am with now is not marriage/mother material, so I am not sure what to do with that!

Well, my sister has 3 kids, so she has done her part in keeping the American birth rate up. This also quieted my parents from bugging me about having kids. However, now my sister wants her kids to have cousins....

By the way, if you want a really good measure of how your medical care system is doing, the infant mortality rate is hard to beat, new persons to replace the recently deceased, a fundamental measure.

But really, overpopulation is something to be taken seriously. The kerplunked economy caused lower birthrates, not the other way around.
