Obama won't say `Mission Accomplished' in speech
Source: AP

WASHINGTON — The White House says there are two words President Barack Obama will not say Tuesday night in his speech about the end of the U.S. combat role in Iraq. The words not spoken: "Mission accomplished."

Seven years ago, then President George W. Bush stood on an aircraft carrier to declare an end to major combat operations in Iraq. A banner proclaiming "Mission Accomplished" flew nearby. The Bush White House came to deeply regret that sign as the war dragged on and U.S. deaths mounted.

Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs says, "You won't hear those words coming from us." Instead, he said Obama would talk about what is involved in the U.S. troop drawdown and the changing mission in Iraq.

1. That's smart.
Best thing for President Obama to do is to be realistic. He's made a great deal of genuine progress in Iraq - we're down to 50,000 servicemembers, officially non-combat, whereas two years ago, we had 130,000 troops, including 80,000 combat troops in ongoing street battles in Iraq.

The war's winding down, and hopefully, President Obama will continue to keep his promises, and the remaining 50,000 will be coming home next year.

So no "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!", no flight suits or codpieces, just the truth would be nice.

12. BTW, I've never heard Obama pull "Mission Accomplished" regarding the recession.
Doing some research, I find that reports usually say his cabinet says so but not Obama himself as far as my liberal-filtered brain has.

He's also been more elaborate regarding the Newsweek cover in July 2009 claiming "the recession is over".

10. The words are all irrelevant... I want action
We should never have invaded Iraq in the first place. We should be out now.

11. "Recovery Summer" is his "Mission Accomplished"
It strikes the same chord, too.
