Multiple Terrorist Arrests in UK Overnight - Breaking News
Just caught this on Sky TV's Sunrise Breakfast News in the UK. No link yet.

Apparently UK police have arrested a number of Islamic terrorist suspects in a series of planned, co-ordinated raids overnight. The raids took place around London and in other parts of the country. Police have made several arrests and have seized a quantity of chemicals (I believe they said ammonium nitrate) similar to those used by Al-Qaeda in the bombings in Bali and Istanbul.

I'll update when I know more.

1. what i don't understand
Edited on Tue Mar-30-04 03:48 AM by drhilarius
is how the bushies can attack Kerry for wanting to "just arrest terrorist and put them on trial", suggesting that police action, rather than military action, is an ineffective method for dealing with terrorism. yet, in almost every instance, a terrorist plot has been undermined by concerted, coordinated police efforts. When are they going to realize that the "war against terrorism" is not a war against a unified political body within a geographic boundary, but rather a criminal tactic, one that cannot be bombed but only thwarted through investigation and cunning?

2. Stopping anything in a civilian environment IS police work
Edited on Tue Mar-30-04 03:26 AM by mouse7
Soldiers are trained to defend, attack, and destroy targets. Finding terrorists is an investigation. Assigning soldiers to investigation work is pointless. You need to assign people trained in conducting investigations to investigation work. That the work of police and intelligence services.

If you need soldiers around to defend the investigators while they are on the site of an investigation, fine. But you can't bomb your way to an investigation breakthrough. The emphasis on military forces on the task of terrorism investigations is sheer stupitity.

15. The case they try to make
Is that states support terrorism either by harboring them or by providing financial support. So they think by showing the world we are not afraid to invade Iraq, I guess thats supposed to scare all these governments into being good boys. Problem is the type of support these terrorists get is not always from the heads of governments. In fact it probably rarely is. There are other people with power/money that can help them whether the head of a government knows about it or not.

4. I see it as this way also and the Brits should know terrorist.
I swear with Bush putting on all these service uniforms that he and this religious right that is so behind him really think of them selfs as the knights of old riding off to battle on their chargers.I mean where are we, having to fight our own people who want to bring us back to being ruled by people who think God is giving then their rights. I thought the whole point of the US was to be done with that and to be ruler bottom up by the people. What is going on?Religious terrorist on one side and crazy right wing religious nuts on the other.Have we lost it?

6. Did anybody pray for big shoes?
I did!

Okely dokely.....

You'd have never used that lure so I felt compelled to give it to a family who had housed, fed and watered me.

Due to an administrative cock-up, you are due to receive a plague of locusts.....

Many apple-ogies for the inconweenience.

10. Not quite what you said
Scotland Yard said the operation was continuing and sources said reports that bomb-making equipment had been found was "going too far".

11. Fair enough, but....
Edited on Tue Mar-30-04 05:28 AM by Pert_UK
Since my original post they have changed the story at that link. It didn't originally mention bombmaking equipment at all, but the report on the news did.

ON EDIT: Breaking on BBC now - over half a tonne of ammonium nitrate was found in London.....Happy now?

8. Well call me crazy...
but we prefer to either charge people (if there is evidence) or let them go (if there isn't any), rather than simply locking them up without trial for years on end and subjecting them to psychological torture.

:eyes:

My suspicion is that possessing chemicals that are used to manufacture explosives will probably entail at least a few nights in prison.....

9. I've seen many of these reports
Edited on Tue Mar-30-04 04:54 AM by Aidoneus
Big headlines with scary words, it quietly ends up being bullshit--but by then there's some new big headline. Hundreds have been harassed in this fashion. Blair's people love beating this drum.

13. Whilst I would agree to a great extent
Remember that fable about crying wolf?

I seem to remember that there was in fact a wolf.

I do believe that partly due to the actions of Bush and Blair that I terrorists will attempt to carry out an atrocity on British shores.

If the reports about 1/2 ton of fertiliser are true, these guys had better be professional gardners.

The police can catch terrorists. The army only creates more.

14. Boston Rd, Hanwell (W7)
I don't think that's rural. Not much reason for anyone to have 1000 lbs of Ammonium Nitrate laying around.

Son, we don't have that in these parts. We found that just doesn't work. We lock 'em up 'till they git their minds right.
