Barbara Boxer and Carly Fiorina battle hard in first Senate debate

Boxer accused Fiorina of opposing every recent job-creation effort in the Senate, including an education bill that provided California with $1.2 billion to save the jobs of 16,500 teachers, and a bill that would increase access to credit and extended tax breaks for small businesses.

"Every time you really get past the surface, you see my opponent fighting for billionaires, for millionaires, for companies that shipped jobs overseas," Boxer said.

"If my opponent's views prevailed, women and doctors would be criminals, they would go to jail. Women would die, like they did before Roe v. Wade," said Boxer, a fierce critic of restrictions on existing abortion rights.

Fiorina reiterated her support for overturning the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion, but tried to turn the discussion back to the economy. "The most important issue right now in this election is the creation of jobs," she said.

It will be interesting to see if California is willing to elect a person who wants to overturn Roe v. Wade is doubtful about climate science and the need to curb global warming gasses.

1. I would not have led with Roe v. Wade, or even millionaires. I would have stuck with

billionaires, jobs overseas and Fiorina's wrecking HP.

In California, where real estate is dear, a perceived net worth of a million is probably not unusual anymore. And not all parts of California are San Fransisco. Lots of neo theos outside San Fransisco and L.A. In fact, even San Fransisco is not San Fransisco anymore, if you know what I mean.

...and that Fiorina was whining about Boxer's picking on her tenure.

For much of the hourlong debate, Boxer kept her opponent on the defensive by steering her answers into scathing critiques of Fiorina's record as chief executive at Hewlett-Packard, where she fired more than 30,000 workers before she was dismissed in 2005.

6. I heard the Boxer comment about Fiorina shipping out 30,000 jobs before...

being terminated (and how she sacrificed for that by collecting $100 million) several times on NPR today. It really hit home-- even though I'm in the choir, I felt it.

If that means anything, it could be that it's becoming a meme. And that would be a good thing.

8. Great Performance by Barbara Boxer

Although the mediots won't tell you, and Razzy will be out with a poll showing Fiorina ahead post-debate in the usual desperate attempt at narrative-setting, Boxer was awesome in this debate. She historically underpolls/overperforms anyway - - this time, I look for her to completely cruise.
